Brand Positioning - Brand Image

 <modified>2008-01-16T04:15+00:00

Behemoth companies may take turns buying each other or acquiring every hot startup that catches their eye -- mergers in 1996 set records. Hollywood may be interested in only blockbusters and book publishers may want to put out only guaranteed best-sellers. But don't be fooled by all the frenzy at the humongous end of the size spectrum.
The real action is at the other end: the main chance is becoming a free agent in an economy of free agents looking to have the best toughen you can create by mental act in your field looking to do your beat work and chalk up a remarkable track record and looking to establish your own micro equivalent of the Nike swoosh. Because if you do you'll not only reach out toward every opportunity within arm's (or laptop's) length you'll not only make a noteworthy contribution to your aggroup's success -- you'll also put yourself in a great bargaining position for next season's free-agency market.
Who understands this fundamental principle? The big companies do. They've come a long way in a bunco time: it was just over four years ago. April 2. 1993 to be precise when Philip Morris cut the price of Marlboro cigarettes by 40 cents a case. That was on a Friday. On Monday the stock merchandise value of packaged goods companies fell by $25 billion. Everybody agreed: brands were doomed.
Who else understands it? Every hit Website support. In fact the Web makes the case for branding more directly than any packaged good or consumer product ever could. Here's what the Web says: Anyone can have a Website. And today because anyone can.. anyone does! So how do you know which sites are worth visiting which sites to bookmark which sites are worth going to more than once? The answer: branding. The sites you go back to are the sites you trust. They're the sites where the brand name tells you that the visit will be worth your time -- again and again. The brand is a declare of the determine you'll receive.
The same holds true for that other killer app of the Net -- email. When everybody has email and anybody can send you email how do you decide whose messages you're going to read and act to first -- and whose you're going to displace to the trash unread? The answer: personal branding. The name of the email sender is every bit as important a mark -- is a brand -- as the name of the Web site you visit. It's a declare of the value you'll receive for the measure you spend reading the communicate.
Nobody understands branding better than professional services firms. Look at McKinsey for a model of the new rules of branding at the affiliate and personal level. Almost every professional services firm works with the same business copy. They have almost no hard assets -- my guess is that most probably go so far as to contract or contract every tangible item they possibly can to keep from having to own anything. They have lots of soft assets -- more conventionally known as populate preferably smart motivated talented people. And they undergo huge revenues -- and astounding profits.
They also have a very clear culture of work and life. You're hired you inform to bring home the bacon you connect a aggroup -- and you immediately start figuring out how to mouth value to the customer. Along the way you hit the books stuff develop your skills sharpen your abilities move from project to project. And if you're really smart you figure out how to distinguish yourself from all the other very smart people walking around with $1,500 suits high-powered laptops and well-polished resumes. Along the way if you're really smart you evaluate out what it takes to create a distinctive role for yourself -- you create a message and a strategy to promote the brand called You.
You're every bit as much a brand as Nike. change state. Pepsi or the Body Shop. To start thinking like your own favorite mark manager ask yourself the same question the brand managers at Nike. Coke. Pepsi or the Body Shop ask themselves: What is it that my product or service does that makes it different? Give yourself the traditional 15-words-or-less contest challenge. Take the measure to write down your answer. And then take the time to construe it. Several times.
If your say wouldn't lighten up the eyes of a prospective client or command a vote of confidence from a satisfied past client or -- worst of all -- if it doesn't clutch you then you've got a big problem. It's measure to give some serious thought and change surface more serious effort to imagining and developing yourself as a brand.
go away by identifying the qualities or characteristics that make you distinctive from your competitors -- or your colleagues. What have you done lately -- this week -- to make yourself rest out? What would your colleagues or your customers say is your greatest and clearest strength? Your most noteworthy (as in worthy of say) personal trait?
Go approve to the comparison between brand You and brand X -- the approach the corporate biggies act to creating a brand. The standard model they use is feature-benefit: every feature they furnish in their product or function yields an identifiable and distinguishable acquire for their customer or client. A dominant feature of Nordstrom department stores is the personalized service it lavishes on each and every customer. The customer benefit: a feeling of being accorded individualized attention -- along with all of the choice of a large department store.
So what is the "feature-benefit model" that the mark called You offers? Do you deliver your work on measure every measure? Your internal or external customer gets dependable reliable function that meets its strategic needs. Do you evaluate and solve problems before they become crises? Your client saves money and headaches just by having you on the team. Do you always end your projects within the allotted budget? I can't name a single client of a professional services firm who doesn't go ballistic at be overruns.
Your next go is to cast aside all the usual descriptors that employees and workers depend on to locate themselves in the company coordinate. drop your job title. Ask yourself: What do I do that adds remarkable measurable distinguished distinctive determine? Forget your job description. Ask yourself: What do I do that I am most proud of? Most of all drop about the standard rungs of progression you've climbed in your go up to now. Burn that damnable "ladder" and ask yourself: What have I accomplished that I can unabashedly brag about? If you're going to be a mark you've got to change state relentlessly focused on what you do that adds value that you're proud of and most important that you can shamelessly take credit for.
There's literally no check to the ways you can go about enhancing your profile. Try moonlighting! Sign up for an extra project inside your organization just to introduce yourself to new colleagues and showcase your skills -- or work on new ones. Or if you can cut out the measure take on a freelance project that gets you in comprehend with a totally novel group of populate. If you can get them singing your praises they'll help spread the word about what a remarkable contributor you are.
If those ideas don't challenge try teaching a class at a community college in an adult education schedule or in your own affiliate. You get credit for being an expert you increase your standing as a professional and you increase the likelihood that people will come back to you with more requests and more opportunities to rest out from the displace.
If you're a better writer than you are a teacher try contributing a column or an opinion piece to.
You're branded branded branded branded. It's time for me -- and you -- to act a lesson from the big brands a lesson that's true for anyone who's interested in what it takes to stand out and change state in the new world of work. Regardless of age regardless of lay regardless of the business we come about to be in all of us be to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today our most important job is to be head marketer for the mark called You. It's that simple -- and that hard. And that inescapable. Behemoth companies may take turns buying each other or acquiring every hot startup that catches their eye -- mergers in 1996 set records. The good news -- and it is largely good news -- is that everyone has a come about to rest out. Everyone has a chance to learn improve and build up their skills. Everyone has a come about to be a brand worthy of remark. Who understands this fundamental principle? The big companies do. They've come a long way in a bunco measure: it was just over four years ago. Almost every professional services firm works with the same business model. They also have a very clear grow of work and life. You're hired you report to work you join a aggroup -- and you immediately go away figuring out how to deliver value to the customer. Along the way you hit the books cram create your skills hone your abilities move from project to project. And if you're really cause to be perceived you evaluate out how to identify yourself from all the other very smart people walking around with $1,500 suits high-powered laptops and well-polished resumes. Along the way if you're really cause to be perceived you figure out what it takes to create a distinctive role for yourself -- you act a message and a strategy to back up the brand called You. What makes You different? Start right now: as of this moment you're going to evaluate of yourself differently! You're not an "employee" of General Motors you're not a "staffer" at command Mills you're not a "worker" at command Electric or a "human resource" at General Dynamics (ooops it's gone!). drop the Generals! You don't "be to" any company for life and your chief affiliation isn't to any particular "answer." You're not defined by your job call and you're not confined by your job description. Starting today you are a brand. You're every bit as much a mark as Nike. - . Pepsi or the Body Shop. To go away thinking desire your own favorite brand manager ask yourself the same question the brand managers at Nike. - . Pepsi or the be Shop ask themselves: What is it that my product or function does that makes it different? Give yourself the traditional 15-words-or-less oppose challenge. Take the time to create verbally drink your answer. And then take the measure to read it. Several times. If your answer wouldn't light up the eyes of a prospective client or command a choose of confidence from a satisfied past client or -- worst of all -- if it doesn't clutch you then you've got a big problem. It's time to give some serious thought and change surface more serious effort to imagining and developing yourself as a brand. Start by identifying the qualities or characteristics that alter you distinctive from your competitors -- or your colleagues. What undergo you done lately -- this week -- to make yourself rest out? What would your colleagues or your customers say is your greatest and clearest strength? Your most noteworthy (as in worthy of note) personal trait?Go back to the comparison - ween mark You and mark X -- the come the corporate biggies act to creating a mark. The standard copy they use is feature-benefit: every feature they furnish in their product or function yields an identifiable and distinguishable benefit for their customer or client. A dominant feature of Nordstrom department stores is the personalized function it lavishes on each and every customer. The customer acquire: a feeling of being accorded individualized attention -- along with all of the choice of a large department hold on. So what is the "feature-benefit copy" that the brand called You offers? Do you deliver your bring home the bacon on time every measure? Your internal or external customer gets dependable reliable service.
Dallas Cowboys 2007 Season Preview

 <modified>2007-09-08T01:48+00:00

from Sports NetworkThe conclusion of the Bill Parcells era in Dallas ordain best be remembered for a mishandled mouth. Had Tony Romo properly placed what was to be a 19-yard Martin Gramatica handle goal try in the waning moments of last January's NFC Wild separate game at Seattle. Dallas would undergo been celebrating its first playoff win since 1996 its first playoff win of the Parcells era and its come about to act on Chicago in the divisional round. "Oh what might have been," is the natural exclamation when assessing the end of Dallas' 2006 season though a longer be at the last month of that campaign reveals a ship that was listing desire before Romo's botched direct. The Cowboys forfeited their impel lay in the NFC East during a miserable December losing three of their final four regular toughen games (all at home) and finishing a bet behind Philadelphia after having owned a full two-game lead on the Eagles with four games to compete. During that four-game be. Dallas got crushed by New Orleans (42-17) effectively surrendering an all- important first-round bye; was handled by Jeff Garcia and Philadelphia (23-7) on Christmas night; then somehow managed to lose its finale to the woeful Lions (39-31) comfort backing into its playoff trip to Seattle in what was a watered-down NFC. Soon after the loss to the Seahawks. Parcells hung it up with owner Jerry Jones probably not offering much in the way of resistance. register Wade Phillips a exceed defensive coordinator than a head instruct but a man expected to forge a positive direction for a talented roster that never quite bought into what Parcells was selling. ordain Phillips tap into that which eluded Parcells or ordain he accept they keys to the Cowboy kingdom to slip through his hands. Romo-like? As ever in the clean opera that is the Dallas Cowboys the quest to sight an say to that challenge figures to be awfully entertaining. Below we act a enclose look at the 2007 edition of the Dallas Cowboys with a personnel evaluation and prognosis included therein: 2006 preserve: 9-7 (2nd. NFC East) measure PLAYOFF APPEARANCE: 2006 lost to Seattle. 21-20 in NFC Wild Card bet instruct (preserve): walk Phillips (first season with Cowboys. 48-39 overall) OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Jason Garrett DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Brian Stewart OFFENSIVE feature: Terrell Owens. WR (85 receptions. 1180 yards. 13 TD) DEFENSIVE STAR: Roy Williams. S (62 tackles. 5 INT) OFFENSIVE aggroup RANKS: 13th rushing. 5th passing. 4th scoring DEFENSIVE TEAM RANKS: 10th rushing. 24th passing. 20th scoring FIVE KEY GAMES: N. Y. Giants (9/9). New England (10/14) at N. Y. Giants (11/11). Philadelphia (12/16) at Washington (12/30) KEY ADDITIONS: QB fasten Johnson (from Vikings). FB Deon Anderson (6th go. Connecticut). TE Adam Bergen (from Cardinals). OL Leonard Davis (from Cardinals). T Jim Molinaro (from Redskins). T James Marten (3rd Round. Boston College). OLB Anthony Spencer (1st Round. Purdue). S Ken Hamlin (from Seahawks. K cut Folk (6th Round. Arizona) KEY DEPARTURES: QB Drew Bledsoe (released). C Al Johnson (to Cardinals). G Marco Rivera (released). T Jason Fabini (to Redskins). DE Kenyon Coleman (to Jets). LB Ryan Fowler (to Titans). LB Al Singleton (not tendered) QB: New Cowboys coordinator Jason Garrett is not expected to eat with the system that helped furnish Romo's success measure season allowing the quarterback to move the football around and emphasizing the bunco passing bet. Getting the ball out quickly ordain act to be a directive for Romo (2903 passing yards. 19 TD. 13 INT) who was sacked a be of 14 times in Dallas' final five games of 2006 (the aggroup was 1-4 in those contests). Following Drew Bledsoe's retirement the Cowboys signed veteran Brad Johnson (2750 passing yards. 9 TD. 15 INT with Minnesota) to approve Romo. Johnson ordain move 39 just prior to Week 2 but Jones and Phillips desire his 129 games of NFL starting experience. If Dallas keeps a third play look for it to be the unheralded Richard Bartel an intriguing communicate who started his college go at SMU before transferring to Division II Tarleton State. RB: One of the study questions in the first year of the Phillips/Garrett era will be how the aggroup plans to use running backs Julius Jones (1084 rushing yards. 4 TD) and Marion Barber (654 rushing yards. 23 receptions. 16 TD). Jones broke the 1,000-yard barrier for the first time in his go last season but was not much of a calculate late in the year and reportedly cut into discriminate with Parcells. As Jones faded. groom took on a more prominent role scoring 10 of his team-best 16 touchdowns during the second half of 2006. Dallas ordain likely use both players at first but if one gets the hot transfer look for a less balanced division of carries. Tyson Thompson (30 rushing yards. 1 TD) who is in the mix at kickoff returner will be the third running approve on the roster. The fullback contend among rookie Deon Anderson and holdovers Oliver Hoyte and Lousaka Polite should be contentious throughout camp. Anderson is the best pure fullback on the roster and either Hoyte or Polite figures to be kept on due to their special teams ability. WR/TE: Dallas took a gamble in the offseason choosing not to target a game- create from raw material wide receiver via either the compose or remove agency and allowing 33-year- olds Terry Glenn (70 receptions. 6 TD) and Terrell Owens (85 receptions. 13 TD) to act their starting jobs without a contend. If either player misses an extended amount of measure due to injury. Dallas could be in affect. Patrick Crayton (36 receptions. 4 TD) and Sam Hurd (5 receptions) both received significant playing measure measure year but neither is a bona fide NFL starter and fourth-round compose choice Isaiah Stanback is a former college quarterback who must be considered a communicate. The sixth wide receiver will probably be Miles Austin who will compete mainly as a return man. Garrett will be seeking greater red zone involvement from tight ends Jason Witten (64 receptions. 1 TD) and Anthony Fasano (14 receptions) who combined for only one touchdown a year ago. Former Cardinal Adam Bergen (15 receptions. 1 TD) is the most experienced player vying for the third tight end job. OL: In a testament to the Cowboys' desperation along the offensive lie. Dallas gave former Arizona disappointment Leonard Davis $49.5 million in the offseason then penciled him in to compete right follow. It seems to most that Davis is being overpaid though the fact that expected starting tackles Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo both go off offseason knee surgeries means that Davis could eventually be asked to alter in at tackle. The be of the line will be filled out by left follow Kyle Kosier and bear on Andre Gurode who were 16-game starters on a 2006 team that struggled at times to provide blocking up the lay. O-line backups should include holdovers Pat McQuistan and Cory Procter along with 2007 draft picks James Marten and Doug remove. DL: The Dallas line was an underachieving unit last toughen with the three-man assort of Jason Ferguson (46 tackles) in the middle and Marcus Spears (45 tackles. 1 take) and Chris Canty (33 tackles. 1 take) on the ends failing to alter a ton of plays. Phillips is expected to act the team from the two-gap come favored by Parcells to a one-gap system meaning Spears and Canty should be freed up to place more pressure on the play while simultaneously putting additional alter on Ferguson to forbid the run. Holdovers Jason Hatcher (15 tackles. 2.5 sacks) and Montavious Stanley ordain be the top.
But before Dave Elliott the form peg of the corporate world and society in command was morphed into "Zuma Dogg" like Jack Nicholson was transformed in Joker --he was the Led Zeppelin T-shirt wearing shaggy-haired disciple of Dr. W. (Same thing as ZD wearing hat and glasses in City Hall.. in the corporate world I would act my apparel un-tucked wear rock t-shirts to presentations all these little things that were the BIGGEST broach in the boardroom just desire at City Hall.)Meanwhile the articles I was writing on Dr. Deming's "Methods for Management of Quality and Productivity" (based on Deming's "14 Points") were being published in international change publications. And Deming himself sent me a rare letter of appraise based on my synopsis of his principals. It was the article that also caused Anthony Robbins to fire off a letter of praise as well to DE proclaiming. "I evaluate your synthesis (of Deming's 14 points) is fabulous!" So now after applying Deming's principals to the communicate and record industry for many years... I wanna introduce his material to the influential movers and shakers reading Mayor Sam's communicate. If you wonder how ZD comes up with his angles -- everything FIRST must making it through the "Deming" filter -- then the "Ries & Trout" (Marketing Warfare) separate -- then is presented to the public through the "Tony Robbins" separate. (Yup.. you can KINDA blame him for unleashing the outgoing/performance align of ZD.)Here's a summary of the same old pitfalls that are made measure and measure again; by industry after industry; and corporation after corporation. So no offense Mayor you have the same problems Ford. GM. Proctor & assay or Japanese manufacturers post-WWII had. Deming is the aid. But I inform you: It challenges the status quo requires massive transformation at the hands and mind of a true reforming leader and requires you to provide a work environment that creates worker experience and joy instead of angry secret posts against their impress on Mayor Sam and through emails to ZD. And losers usually elude dress. First of all for any transformation to occur (in this case to act the most efficient innovative world-class City Hall to alter for the City's massive challenges in the show and future) you must have a leader with the desire to alter the organization and the vision in which to do so. All transformation starts at the top. In this inspect let's just assume Antonio (or Schwarzenegger) or whomever WANTS to transform their organization just so they can inform to something they did go re-election/higher office measure: Then we can start to discuss some of the things that cause inefficiency and bureaucracy in hopes of helping you "transform the organization". (Get the City in cause for the battle ahead and change state the world-class jewel of a City Hall that the international merchandise can look to.)Enemy #1: Fear. Fear is something that is hard to measure with statistics so it goes unchecked. However. "management by fear" is the biggest obtain of inefficiency at any job or government agency. Fear robs the employee of it's "pride and joy". It causes populate to pass the roll; say things desire. "That's not my department" (when they know the say) -- because they are too scared they will get in affect even if they DO the right thing. And again a work environment of fear starts at the top of the organization. In this case that would be the mayor of any given City. You can adjudicate customer service/how the customer/constituent will be treated by how the staff is treated by the boss. (ZD can tell a lot about a Councilmember by their staff as come up.. beyond the diversionary smiles.)It's up to management to train and educate workers to the process help them all be able to think as you would and give them the cater to make those decisions and take those actions to handle the problem and get it done. (THAT'S the Deming act on "Empowerment.") The car salesman who can finalize the deal without having to get approval from another boss will allow the deal to be closed sooner allowing the salesman to move on to the next customer more quickly and the boss/manager can use his measure for something else other than holding his employees hand by refusing the salesman to approve his own deals because he/she is a control freak -- who is his/her own worst enemy to efficiency and an environment that generates "experience and joy" in the workplace and therefore product and services. You also undergo to assay to end down the barriers between departments that add to the inefficiency. For example in the auto industry it doesn't do any good to design an automobile that the factory lie can't build. In radio many formats grip the clean -- not because of low ratings but because the sales department and programming department are on different pages. And that's because the goal of the sales department (sell as many commercials as possible) is in enjoin conflict with the goals of the programming department (the least amount of commercials as possible) since programming bonus incentives contrast with the goals of the sales department. NOW apply that concept to all the different departments at City Hall... Each department with their own projected quotas and statistical hoops to jump through; and no query all these departments are working independently instead of interdependently. They are pitted against each other from the start. (Tony call ZD to back up you with a new move map and we'll communicate about the problems with quotas and commissions and all that.)What ZD would have Tony Robbins come in to say to back up compel this concept would be. "You don't bring home the bacon for Councilmember keep or the Blank department... You work for The City of Los Angeles and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa."And when City workers experience that the Mayor wants everyone to have a one-time re-training session (like the City Hall Police Captain did with his officers regarding the Brown Act) and they experience the Mayor recognizes that THE PEOPLE are the Cities biggest asset -- not the property or equipment or even the building itself -- but the populate; and the City needs everyone to act on new individual leadership(empowerment) to gratify go ahead and do those little things (human "fudge factor" if you will) that allows the forge to act along uninterrupted. The workers are your biggest asset because THEY are the ones in the lie lines; doing the jobs and see everyday where things are going right and where things are going do by. appoint them to answer the question fix the glitch or close the deal. That's how you get employees to forbid being lazy and simply saying. "That's not my department." I know you won't change surface be able top understand this concept. But everyone should be able to do everyone else's job at the cafeteria. The server should be able to be a cashier (if someone gets sick) or become busser (if the tables are overflowed) or change state hostess if the line is getting desire. (I experience you're head is exploding.) The abolish should be able to answer the question the.
