"A Big Gamble: Macau" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 21:37:22

Born of a Portuguese father and a Chinese care (or the other way around depending on what gender Portugal and China are…). Macau is a displace I once only knew as the domiciliate of sweatshops—not exactly the most desirable of professions. Admittedly. I had heard of Macau but had no idea where it was. If you’re in the same boat it’s an island located off the southern coast of China about 45 minutes by ferry from Hong Kong. Macau desire Hong Kong is part of China under a “one country two systems” setup designed by the Beijing Government (meaning: though part of China they are essentially different countries really only sharing a military). desire Hong Kong. Macau was once colonized by foreign powers most notably Portugal. Macau remained under Portuguese rule until it was returned to China in 1999 (Hong Kong rejoined China in 1997). If you didn’t know about the sweatshops you’ve probably by now heard of the casinos. After cleaning up the sweatshops (as far as I know) Macau’s government has set its sights on becoming Las Vegas East and it’s succeeding quite well it seems. (Macau is the only place where its legal to gamble in China… a culture obsessed with luck…and gambling for that be.). In August. The Venetian Macau opened as the largest casino resort in the world (and the world’s largest building by floorspace at 10.5 million sq ft) and the other ten or so casinos already in operation in Macau make the island’s gambling revenue now greater than The Las Vegas Strip (about 7 billion USD passes through Macau last year. 6 billion and change on The Strip). Macau is set to surpass up the State of Nevada (10.66 billion annual revenue) by early next year to change state the largest gambling center in the world. (Nine more casinos are slated to open by 2009in Macau.) Across the island from the now gleaming take of casinos and construction dust sits the more Portuguese side of the island left from days gone by of Portuguese colonization and Catholic missionaries who once arrived here by the boat loads hoping to cement Portugal’s strategic port in the Far East. What the Portuguese colonizers and missionaries created is a fabulously interesting little city-state on an island of change streets small cafés and a few sandy beaches. Today the ethnic Portuguese population is small only a few thousand out of the 500,000 on the island. I’m told but what comfort remains in many areas is a extremely interesting cross-bred grow of Mediterranean-infused.

"The Ten-minute Sommelier A Wine Guide" posted by ~Ray

Below you'll find extensive information on leading booze bar articles and products to back up you on your way to success. By Josh Of course if your restaurant is serious about serving booze you ordain be to undergo a wine expert on transfer. This kind of expert is called a "sommelier" which is French for booze steward. However for the restaurant that wants to just keep a few bottles on the menu a basic working knowledge of wine ordain be enough to get a clutch on the subject. booze has enjoyed an explosion in popularity recently. Medical research has confirmed that not only is wine enjoyable to the senses but it is good for the be as well. The newly-discovered health benefits of wine have led to a resurgence in its popularity. But of cover booze has always been popular with the serious gourmet. Wine fanciers are a pretty sophisticated lot and booze knowledge is so intricate and esoteric that you're almost guaranteed to find no end of things to learn about it. Get used to the idea that you will meet "booze snobs" who hold their knowledge of wine to be some kind of distinguishing attach of their high class. If you're catering to the booze elite this bind obviously won't be for you. For the rest of us common folk here's just enough to experience the basics. booze goes into two categories: red and color. These are also known as "mostly sweet" and "mostly dry" or tart. Some exceptions exist so that some red wines are tart and some color wines are sweet but they are rare. The general rule of ride for serving with dishes is that color wines go with seafood and poultry and red wines go with everything else. In the category of white wines we undergo: Chardonnay which is the most popular being flexible with a wide range of flavors and usually dry and full-bodied. Sauvignon which is sharp and dry kind of desire aged cheddar with a grip and a impel. Riesling which is usually German having the character of being light with some dryness. Finally there is White Zinfandel which is mildly sweet. The other category is red wines with the most popular kinds being: Cabernet which is the most popular; it has a medium to bold comprehend and is sometimes sweet. Merlot which is deep in color and flavor and very very full-bodied. Pinot Noir which is a gamble since it is expensive hard to get fermented just alter but very tasty when it's done alter and hence held in wide consider. And at last we undergo Red Zinfandel which like its white cousin is also very sweet and lighten. In addition to sorting wines with these breeds there is also categories of wines designating their intended intend. So there is the Aperitif used for a before-meal appetizer; it is often flavored and it includes Sherry and Madeira. Table Wine which is served with the meal or as a stand-alone refreshment. Dessert booze which as the name suggests is very sweet and goes well with cake or cheese; these consider the varieties of turn. Tokay and also Sherry. And finally there are the other categories which fit alongside grape wines. Sparkling Wines are what we commonly label champagne. Of course your chef will know about cooking wines which are meant to fry your flounder in and not for drinking and are usually very salty or spicy. At last we have the category of "country wines" which are made from something besides grapes; country wines can and are made from everything from apples to gooseberries and may be separated into sub-categories just like grape wines. The flavors and characteristics of booze undergo their own jargon. Wine grapes without any additives at all can include a huge arrange of engrave in comprehend and smell. comprehend is usually described in many terms. They may be: Sweet which will mean either sweet as in dulcify or sweet as in a vanilla or apple taste. Dry here means tart or tangy with the alcohol circumscribe showing through. Besides dry a booze can also be described as tart desire in citrus. Fruity wines can have an under-taste ranging from raspberries to bananas - and still include just grapes! Jammy means it has a really full-bodied bear taste - see Merlot for a good example. Spicy can convey one of the spice tastes such as black spice cloves cinnamon nutmeg etc. Oaky means that it is subtly flavored by the oak barrels which fermented it which is seen as a desirable feature in some wines. measure an earthy comprehend is not like literal earth but a very ripe full taste. Eventually as you broach in more wine you will be a bad bottle. This happens in the finest establishments and vineyards and is not to be taken personally. You usually cannot express if a wine has gone wrong until you've opened it. The complicated business of fermenting wine leads to some mishaps involving matters of delicate chemistry. The problems to watch for are these: Corked means the store's cork has gotten moldy so that the wine ordain comprehend desire a mildewed cardboard box. Buttery ordain convey that it has a comprehend desire cover which is caused by some complicated yeast chemistry; however in Chardonnay some cover flavor is encouraged on intend. Oxidized.

"New Season - Fall 2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-20 01:32:07

Towards the end of September many animes I was watching wrapped up. Starting October a ton of new series aired. It’s a promising new seasons with over 30 new animes to choose from. A little overwhelming. I briefly went through the synopsis of a majority of them as come up as watched the promotional material on some. However the videos weren’t subbed so I was kind of clueless as to what they were saying. Nonetheless. I got a conclude for the animation style and the express actors / actresses. The upcoming season felt a lot different from the ones I has been watching over the summer. There’s a be of romance cut of life drama type series. It seems to lack comedies but I guess I can only express when I actually check them. I’ve decided to give each series a try first watching at least 2-3 episodes. Blue Drop [Genjo]I first downloaded a DMP sub of Blue Drop which turned out to be a parody sub. -.- A total expend of my limited bandwidth. The first episode of Blue Drop is kind of slow. It introduces the main characters. Mari Wakatake is transferring to this ‘noble’ boarding school. However she entangle that she’s being put there because her grandma just wants to get rid of her. Hagino Senkoji is Mari’s new roommate. Mari saw her during her go to the new educate where Hagino was surrounded by a flock of seagulls. As they shook hands after meeting in the dorm room. Hagino’s eyes turned blue as if she’s possessed and began choking Mari. In Mari’s mind a flashback of a little girl crying in a sea of blast briefly appeared. Meanwhile at the educate office. Mari’s homeroom teacher along with the headmaster are discussing an incident that occurred five years involving Mari. The details of the incident was not disclosed. Later on at dinner. Mari was introduced to the rest of the girls living in her dorm. Later that night. Mari noticed Hagino leaving the dorms and decided to go her. She ends up at a shipyard port-like area. She open Hagino standing in front of the waters. All of a sudden a large color forge / robot emerged from the waters. Hagino turns around with the aforementioned blue eyes while Mari watches with worry. As I said earlier episode 1 is decrease. Characters are introduced and two mysteries are presented - the incident 5 years ago and Hagino with the weird robot. These was only briefly touched upon in this episode. I was hoping for a bit more action when I read the anime description. I will keep watching to see how things go. It still has potential to be good. Clannad [SS-Eclipse]Clannad seemed to be a much anticipated anime of the season from what I gathered in various anime forums and blogs. I have no idea what it is about or what the hype is for. From the description it felt desire a romantic series which is one type of anime I tend to avoid but I decided to give it a try to see if it’s worth all the hype. It turns out to be more interesting than I expected (though I was really expecting nothing from it). The animation style reminds me of AIR which may be why I was kind of against watching this. (I was absolutely confused in AIR.) Clannad is set in a (I evaluate) post secondary educate where main characters Tomoya Okazaki and Nagisa Furukawa attends. Tomoya is fairly indifferent towards going to school and is often late to classes. Contrarily. Nagisa really loves the school. She was away for a year and is now friendless. Tomoya met her on his way to educate one day. He saw her eating lunch alone in the school yard and decided to converse with her for a bit. Nagisa wanted to join the Drama club but thinks that she lack physical strength to command the activities. Tomoya encourages her to give it a try. But they open out that the unify had been discontinued already. Tomoya went to Nagisa’s family bakery for a visit and met her kind of goofy parents. When he returned domiciliate he was disgusted with his own half-drunken father who had been drinking and gambling since Tomoya’s mother passed away when he was little. The above description may sound like another romance story but there are some element of comedy in Clannad which really liven up the episode. It doesn’t fit the stereotype romance anime in my mind where a million girls falls for this one hit guy or a clump of love triangles become. Several other girls were introduced but they don’t seem to be interested in Tomoya although that can’t be said for future episodes. This first episode really did introduce the story in a nice way. I’ll keep watching this until it changes into that annoying like stories (which I hope it doesn’t!). Da Capo II [ASF] (not to be confused with Da Capo Second toughen)I’ve never watched the previous Da Capo series but from the story synopsis there’s a 53 year gap between the last series and this. So. I figure I can’t be too lost without seeing them. This is another anime set in a school setting. The first episode.

"Memoir from Penn State (part 1)" posted by ~Ray

Contrary to popular belief I have not been abducted robbed or murdered thrown in jail deported or maimed. I'm alive and well and almost too well to pen this telecommunicate; hence the decelerate. But alas. I am a kind bushel who derives pleasure from gloating about my international experiences so shall do so. The USA is super-sized and it's an visualise that applies equally to her houses cars freeways university campuses cities and indeed populate. For the most move this super-size is endearing though occasionally exhausting. I must say that my very first impression of the U. S was not an altogether welcoming one. LA airport is clinical and the customs officials are anything but genial. As I moved to the lie of the stand the portraits of furnish. Cheney and Rice loomed large and my palms went just a tad clammy; were the hundreds of forms I completed the right ones? ordain those overdue library books get me a sufficient threat to national security? Then without so much as a blink the official with my future in his amply proportioned hands stamped the necessary forms and I was on my way. LA is not as the movies declare. The city is sprawling urban and abrupt. Yet as in every other displace in the U. S that I've visited the well-heeled or heel-less locals (there appears to be nothing in between) are only too happy to go out of their way to help with directions or show you the sites. Whether this is an example of national/city/university pride or an innate friendliness I'm not sure and it really doesn't matter. In LA I stayed in the Venice Beach Cotel – a youth hostel about 30 mins control from the airport and the domiciliate locate of my cousin Josh. The hostel was right on the land and the direct of characters on the boardwalk outside would rival any sitcom. There were tourists homeless rollerblading shaman tarot readers joke tellers druggies children populate singing without inhibition and just about everyone else you can think of – all in the one displace all harmless and all seemingly oblivious to whatever strange acts were going on around them. In many ways they accurately reflect my undergo of the U. S so far. Highlights of LA included the Universal Studios including the 'back lots'; a façade of a city with from different times and places that is redecorated for most Hollywood movies that would have in the past been shot on location! Although the glitz lasted little more than 3 or so streets. Hollywood itself was a sight to see. I did the touristy thing and took a manifold decker journey ride to the main sights including Paris Hilton's favourite act away restaurant and the shop that Brad Pitt used to spruik outside of before he made it big. We also went to the Getty Museum one of the world best museums - the collections and architecture were stunning. Just as interesting was the bus ride between the two places through the Hollywood Hills where bait and I were literally (without exaggeration) the only Caucasian populate on the bus - the vast majority were African American women many of whom work domestically in the rich neighbourhood we were passing through. On 28 December. bait and I headed to Mexico for 5 days; to a coastal town called Ensenada a bring together of hours over the U. S adjoin. It was amazing to see the difference in housing and living conditions is the lay of about a 5 minute bus move into Mexico. We travelled along the stunning coastline into Ensenada a touristy town and relished our chance to flee student budgets and live like kings for a few days. There seemed to be an unusually large be of pharmacies selling viagra (literally every few shops) to cater to the retirees who come into port for the day bound for San Francisco. Whale-watching endless tacos and spectacular scenery were seen and eaten; good times!Next forbid was San Diego - one of my favourites so far. It seems that if you were to sit drink and intend a city; with just the alter populate amenities sights location and weather you'd come up with something desire San Diego. We stayed at a great hostel and I'm learning to go with Hostelling International hostels wherever possible; they be by far the best. One of the most sights was the San Diego Photographic Museum which was currently exhibiting a collection focussed on cross-border immigration specifically the U. S - Mexico border that I had crossed the day before. It gave a visual history of the daily attempts of many South Americans to cross illegally many of whom assay life and limb travelling from Venezuela into Mexico and north on a freight train before climbing the fence and crossing no man's arrive to a better life. I wondered whether Americans viewing the exhibition were ashamed of the inequality at their doorstep and began to see paralells with our treatment of asylum seekers. To use populate's names and show day to day aspects of their lives helped to humanise their vow a tactic which should be used in a similar in Australia. It was in San Diego that bait and I parted ways - he approve to LA and I on to San Fransisco a bunco pip to the north. San Fransisco is an amazing city! And if I thought the people in LA were nuts. San Franciscans were on another planet. Being my far too organised self. I booked accomodation on the net from Melbourne so it was always a bit of a gamble but the hostel was more than I bargained for. Impression #1 - greeted by the sweet smell of marijuana and a hostel manager akin to the one in Silence of the Hams end with twitch and manic express emotion that surfaced at inopportune moments. Impression #2 - Matt: "where's the nearest place to get food?". Manager: "I wouldn't go out of here after dark if I were you - a guy was mugged at the end of this street the other day". Impression #3 - Irrate guest interrupts conversation with talk of bed bugs in his room. Impression #4 - friend of the owner quietly advises me that he would stay he if he were me. By this point I was beginning to agree with him but I/It was cold dark and tired and I didn't conceive of searching for anywhere else and knew I wouldn't get my deposit approve. So there I stayed for the evening. At this point said Manager comments that "it's so nice when we get gentlemen like yourself be here. Our customers are usually crazies in one way or another". The ensuing conversation proved one of the most entertaining I've had since arriving consisting mainly of his making wild statements about San Francisco's "90% break rate" and conspiracy theories about local guard. He was up for a laugh and the whole thing was quite surreal. Needless to say I was out of there the next morning and the Hostelling International hostel I found was palacial by comparison. The city itself was stunning - the hills were as steep as in the movies the telecommunicate car was a fun ride and crookedest street in the world was as its title suggests the museums were stunning and Alcatraz (former prison island and fort) was a comprehend to behold. In many ways I wish I'd had more time in both San Diego and San Francisco – both cities had a charm to them that took a little more measure to capture. They are both cities and I could very easily be in for a while I evaluate. Next forbid was the quintessential U. S experience – New York City; a city whose coat I found difficult to grasp in the two days I was which makes it next to impossible to do it justice in an email. The flight to New York was interesting in itself – stormy skies made for a turbulent ride with the head instructing change surface man to take their seats several times..

"The Cruise, part one" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-25 00:32:26

“You don’t look a enable horse in the communicate” so they say and actually the opposite is true. Generally gift horses go with strings attached like being forced to buy what it is that you’re supposed to be getting for remove or worse. That’s what happens 98 times out of a hundred and one lives for the other two. I was supposed to go to Greenland and had a clump of actual venues line up and everything but at the measure minute they fired the PR guy and disavowed any knowledge of my existence. I was ticked off about it when I was checking my spam filter and open something that seemed to be legitimate. RSVP the largest Gay travel agency sent me an email inviting me to connect their cruise of the Mediterranean. I told them I wasn’t Gay in fact just the opposite but if they were going to pay for the whole thing. I would put any biases I had aside and go along. It turns out that they weren’t. I knew it. I would undergo to pay for the airfare myself but that wasn’t all that bad. I was able to get a really cheap ticket. But in the meantime there was what seemed to be long gaps in communication. There were eight rooms reserved for press and I got one. Two weeks with a thousand gays. If they could take me. I could take them. No problem. Now the populate at RSVP had told a little fib when they sent me my free book. They said that for my connivance they had a discount bus transfer from either the airport at or downtown Rome for eighty-four bucks. This is undoubtedly adjust about the be of a book but reject? No way in hell. The be of a instruct to the cruise displace port of Civitaveccia is only FOUR euros about five and a half bucks per person and there’s a remove shuttle bus from just below the station to the docks half a mile away. I’m not sure if it was RSVP or Holland America who told the whopper but it doesn’t back up matters as to Citivaveccia itself this is a small town with an incredible land. Apparently it’s one of the very few places in the Mediterranean with decent surfing. I didn’t really see all that much of the town itself but it had a slightly moldy be which is typical for tropical climes. Once I got on the displace and it IS a ship things changed quite a bit. The Westerdam is one of the bigger ships in the Holland America fleet ten stories high it is as the cliché goes a floating luxury hotel. I’ve never been actually been on it’s like before. Oh sure. I’ve been on ships before but usually in steerage or sleeping on deck. Getting there is supposed to be half the fun on these things and the people at RSVP have managed to get the standard entertainment for the crowd they’re catering to. Gay men looking to get laid mostly and the stops on arrive along the way are mostly extras. As one passenger described it: “It’s not as tacky some other cruises I’ve been on.”I was invited to the media party the first night and someone slammed me as soon as she heard my label. It seems that she had invited me to a free dinner at an extremely fancy schmancy restaurant in Manhattan on the dime of the Brazilian government and I told our hostess that I was primarily there for the remove meal. It seems that a person was nearly fired because I was honest and upfront with people I was doing business with. Next time I’ll say I’m the financial correspondent for Life Magazine. But the populate at RSVP knew I was straight and they were okay with that. There are very few of us on come in outside of the crew. After a few days aboard. I’m very comfortable with my sexual preference as none of the guys on board is the least bit sexy in fact far uglier than I am and most of the lesbians are pretty old. But the problem with cruising on a tub as big as the Westerdam is that there’s not actually enough measure to see all that much unless you fork out a sixty to a hundred bucks on a tour. There are cheaper alternatives to be sure but at 75¢ a minute using the internet for anything object briefly checking for emergency emails. What is being offered is basically pass dwell for grownups with an emphasis in this inspect on “ethnic heritage and grow,” I e flog bar recreations and bad dance with halfway decent singers and draw acts. But the cerebrate I came on this thing was to see the ports of label most of which have changed a great broach since I measure visited them some of which was approve in the ‘80s. The journey was for the most part a circumnavigation of Italy one of those countries that has a little too much history for it’s own good. Three thousand years of food art and architecture where one can get some of the best meals in the world for under a hundred bucks. It used to be twenty but I’ll get to that later. The first forbid on any study journey of Italy is Rome the Eternal city. Rome has more art per square inch than any other displace in the world. This was once the bushel property of the Catholic church and before that was the capitol of the Classical world for about five hundred years. It’s unbelievable what one can see there.
