"EQ2 Deserves a Second Look" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 22:45:43

At release I believed EQ2 had nailed several fundamentals in MMO design but dropped the roll on execution in some fundamental ways that hurt the bet’s ability to gel with players. First and foremost were the visuals: the game chose a visual style that planted it firmly in the uncanny valley. While environments and architecture were a definite go forward from other MMO titles of the day they didn’t have the unique vibrancy that WoW possessed. The characters in EQ2 were an abysmal failure. All of the human-like races were horrendous the kerra should have been “cute” but looked just weird the Iksar looked desire badly molded challenge figures. Only the Ratonga struck me as a compelling choice (and I really am not a fan of furry). Another area of failed execution was in the intense camping required to complete many quests. I think they did a great job of plating some hardcore quests around a bed of casual and group content. But many of those hardcore morsels required camps of six to eight hours inducing seizures and EQ1 flashbacks in the brains of old veterans. I remember logging in to a camp to kill an NPC that only spawned once a day only to find that six other people had managed to log in before me. This was back when the servers were rebooted every day (I assume to correct for resource leaks). That NPC probably would undergo never respawned had the servers not been restarted. The bet also had an obtuse and boring introductory area (the island) that simply failed to represent any dimension of the bet in a favorable lighten. The bet really did feel more expansive less linear and more rewarding beyond the island but good luck trying to persuade anyone of that. In fact early in the bet’s live cycle the aggroup decided to revamp the island making it change surface more tedious. Someone at SOE clearly subscribed to the idea that MMOs needed to direct your transfer through the first few play sessions. The same ideology that led to a brutally tedious and boring introductory area in SWG. As an aside I’ll say this is just a bad idea plain and simple. You are making an MMO! You undergo HOURS to teach players how to play your game. Get them into the social interactive. REAL game world as soon as possible. Present increases in complexity over measure…there’s no need to show them how to craft and how to assort and how to form raids and how to dice for loot in the first two hours of play. So yeah. EQ2 had some problems. Despite those problems the bet had a lot of successes. The Nektropos Castle dilate in my mind was pure brilliance. It felt desire an old school D&D campaign dungeon replete with secret passages puzzles revelations and an unfolding story as you advanced. Many of the EQ2 dungeons captured this essence. But successes were hard to convey to players who saw the horrible characters and the island starting area and decided the bet was a destroy. It didn’t help that at some point they hit the define add on game fit. This was a case where players had become familiar with the bet’s fairly group intensive design and were disrupted by a dress that made soloing and duoing viable methods of progression. In retrospect the decision was the alter one and I’ll communicate more about that in a bit but at the time it was a mess. It was obvious that someone had been playing WoW saw how WoW’s numbers were crushing EQ2 and felt that the solo friendly create by mental act was an important move of WoW’s success. That person was alter but they made a decision that ordain always create chaos and is never easy to manage: they decided to completely change a live game’s contend design ideology and implementation. EQ2’s very own combat upgrade. Most zones were revamped with trash that could be aviate’d. Areas that used to be deadly to travel through alone were nerfed in difficulty combat mechanics were changed to make soloing more viable. All of the classes in the bet were revamped. Veteran players were mortified hardcore players screamed that the bet had gone soft and every reaction that you could evaluate happening did. It probably hurt the game’s subs but I don’t experience. It certainly shook the community’s confidence. This was the point where most of my friends who were playing the game left the game. (I had already left.) Despite the combat upgrade the expansion and live teams rolled send producing circumscribe working with the game they had actually updating the engine technology and bringing us to where we are today: EQ2 in great shape many problems solved with a promising future if SOE can get people to check it out. Let’s analyse. The full-on expansions are where the bet has really moved forward. Nearly all of the new content areas are interesting there’s a great mix of solo duo assort and raid content. There’s a great mix of casual and hardcore quest content. But a few things stand out as significant triumphs: The guild system. Other games should aspire to have a guild system this bad ass. You gain levels. Unlock special content. Can obtain certain factions and rewards with guild efforts. The achievements of your members are recorded and reported. For recruitment you can alter a special summon that describes your guild and requirements in game. It’ll show the names & pictures of your recruitment officers who can add their own comments. Overall the guild system is the most end and most rewarding of any MMO in the western merchandise today. Legends of Norrath. This deserves its own communicate modify and will get one once I’ve played it more. Legends of Norrath is SOE’s in-game card game. And it’s freakin great. The interface attractive colorful and rich with great artwork. The bet’s UI is very similar to Magic Online but far more slick and polished than MtGO 3. You can find cards as loot while playing EQ2: even starter packs and booster packs. You can get EQ2 equipment and mounts from cards you pull from your packs. You can contend other people in bet to matches. The quality aim is insanely high. I convey completely and unexpectedly “this is SOE’s beat product in years” high. The tie-in with EQ and EQ2 creates a dynamic monetized gameplay angle that is a brilliant win of fun and marketing. Also: every subscription gets a free go away deck to play with. Achievement Points. EQ2 has added an AA similar somewhat similar to the one in EQ but a bit more structured. First they call it “achievement points” not AAs. AAs are not earned like xp. Instead you gain AAs for killing named mobs discovering rare loot and exploring new areas. AAs come abstain and often from aim 10 and the abilities and upgrades you can buy with them make a difference. One side cause of AAs is to keep some of the middling raid circumscribe relevant. Players ordain still create impromptu groups to kill rare spawn named raid mobs because the kills count as remove AA points (the first time you kill a particular named). The achievement inform system has provided a nice advancement mechanic to complement leveling and recognise activities other than questing and grinding. Achievements can be respec’d and there are achievement choices for pvp soloing grouping and raid focuses. I believe they are adding a system that lets you hold on specs and swap between them…so you can make a pvp and a assail create and keep track of both. Fast and ongoing content releases. SOE just crushes Blizzard.

"Did you think all along, that Super Smash Bros. Brawl would have ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-06 00:14:27

Did you evaluate all along that Super Smash Bros. Brawl would have Wi-Fi play? As you all know by now. Masahiro Sakurai updated the Super Smash Bros. altercate Dojo website with information regarding the bet's Wi-Fi play. What we have so far is confirmation of two modes one being With Friends and one With Anyone. We were also told that there are more modes coming and that they'll be revealed gradually. I personally would be really happy to see a 2 player co-op mode added to the bet's Adventure Mode. The Subsmace Emissary. And something else that I think is very important to have in this bet perhaps crucial even is online rankings. With a game this big with this much replayability and what's sure to sell in the millions we need to experience who are the beat players in the world and give those people proper credit and fame.. in my opinion. Also express chat would be a nice help but for playing with my local friends. I don't mind using my house phone's ear conjoin.. but that's not going to bring home the bacon playing with some of you here on 1up that are a couple thousand miles away. (telecommunicate account overkill). And to say my own question yes. I thought that the game would have Wi-Fi play all along because Mr. Satoru Iwata said it would.. though I admit that the lack of information on the game at E3 made me a little cautious as to how "much" online would it have. I'm very pleased with this 100th modify that the Brawl website gave us though. Thanks for your participation. "Raph Koster's Areae finally pulls back the wraps" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 18:01:39

For what has seemed like nearly an eternity online game god has been mum about Areae the company he formed after leaving his previous job as chief creative officer at EverQuest and feature Wars Galaxies publisher. Sony Online Entertainment. At conference after conference. Koster has spoken representing Areae but really never revealing even the slimmest of morsels beyond an initial statement that the affiliate was sound to "reinvent virtual worlds," about what the San Diego startup was up to. On Tuesday however that finally changed when Areae unveiled some details about its product at the TechCrunch 40 conference in San Francisco. For those of us that weren't able to attend we were left to sitting in lie of a computer hitting refresh on a browser waiting for the Metaplace Web place to be updated to designate the product's details. In my case that also meant IMing with my colleague. Rafe Needleman who is at the conference and who is sending me details as they emerge. "We are re-inventing virtual worlds that stop working desire AOL," Koster said. "and go away working the way the Web does.... You can create a massive multiplayer game in minutesthere are style sheets to make building easier. Koster said that Metaplace would accept users to employ Web 2.0 tools like tags wikis and forums in the pursuit of quickly and easily making usable fun virtual worlds. "Virtual worlds undergo enormous potential," Koster said. "but they are obsolete built on 20-year-old technology. We don't know what you'll do with [this] but that's the power of this new medium and that's why we're so excited." So what we experience is that Metaplace is likely some sort of virtual world construction set that ordain allow people to build online games "from Tetris up to role-playing games," though without Koster telling us exactly what it is we're still only guessing. If that's what it is it's not the first to go along. The Multiverse communicate has already staked out a pretty impressive lay in that handle. On its Web site which is now be it says. "create a virtual apartment and put it on your website. bring home the bacon with friends to alter a huge MMORPG. Share your bedevil game with friends. We have a vision: to let you build anything and play everything from anywhere. Eventually anyway. We have to finish first." It also says. "Metaplace is a next-generation virtual worlds platform designed to work the way the Web does. Instead of giant custom clients and huge downloads. Metaplace lets you play the same bet on any platform that reads our open client standard. We give a suite of tools so you can alter worlds and we host servers for you so that anyone can cerebrate and play. And the client could be anywhere on the Web."
