arp all it wants he will not apologize for his recent comments that “you might as well burn those [minority] kids” who drop out of school because “that’s the end of their lives.” Byrne’s made his controversial comments during a debate in which he was arguing for school vouchers a plan that would allow public aid for families who send their children to private schools. While some educators and politicians – particularly conservative thinkers – argue that vouchers would force failing schools to clean up their act or lose valuable public dollars critics of the plan say that vouchers merely allow already better funded schools to siphon off much-needed dollars from those schools that need them most. A voucher program which would grant Utah families $500 to $3,000 per child depending on household income is on the Nov. 6 ballot in Utah. The NAACP as well as most education groups in Utah opposes vouchers. On Friday the NAACP demanded that Byrne – whose online home store boasts that it “features everything needed to make your home your castle” – apologize for his remarks which were posted on YouTube. “Right now. 40 percent of Utah minorities are not graduating from high school,” he says. “You may as well burn those kids. That’s the end of their life. That’s the end of their ability to achieve in this society if they do not get a high school education. You might as just throw the kids away.” Jeanetta Williams the president of the Utah branch of the NAACP and one who opposes vouchers told The Associated Press that she was stunned by his comments. “It says he’s not sympathetic to the minority community and he means exactly what he said,” Williams said adding that she believes Byrne literally meant that minorities who don’t graduate should be burned or thrown away. “Those were his words not mine,” she said. Countered Byrne: “These folks have been selective in their editing. I very clearly said the system is throwing away 40 percent of the minority kids because they’re not graduating. I’m saying that I’m against throwing kids away.” But says Williams. Utah is 83.5 percent White. 11 percent Hispanic and 1 percent Black. Byrne didn’t mention the White kids who drop out she said. Do you accept Byrne’s assertion that he was taken out of context?
Let him make all the comments that he feels is true in his heart. If you would like to hurt him DO NOT BUY FROM HIS WEBSITE. I’m getting so tired of everyone pointing the fingers and there’s is nothing to be done about it. If we as blacks keep sitting around and killing one another call each other out of our names then why do we get mad at the whites that treat us the same way as our own kind. It’s one thing to do something to make it positive but to sit back with your hand raised and doing nothing but critizing everything someone has to say needs to stop. I haven’t seen a white person that will turn on another white like our brothers and sisters are doing. It’s time to stop writing on the message broads and take it to the communities that are in trouble and pulling the innocent ones out of the situation.
I can see why people would be offended by him saying that. But truly this man is probably not black and truly don’t care anything about blacks in general. So why would he apologize for what he said. Whatever is in your heart will eventually show and that is simply what has happened. I am not shocked it seems to be the norm now for people to give up. People give up on themselves on their families so why wouldn’t they give up on the poor black kids around the corner who has been surpressed his whole life anyways. As long as we dont give up on our black youth that’s all that matters. We as a people have to fight for our kids and let trash like Byrne burn in the fireplace. And believe me trash will have it’s day to burn. I use to shop on overstock com but I will never again shop on this site or any site affiliated with this site. I will also let my friends know not to shop on these sites. We will not support a business that is against our black youth.
Erica sweetie,Big Al is correct whites do the same thing to one another,we just don’t hear about it. They do even worse things than we can imagine to another. i e in 2006,a guy down in La murdered his girlfriend had sex with her corpse then cut her up. He boiled some of her and then he baked some of her. cut up some potatoes and some other veggies as if he was going to make gumbo out of her. He spent a week getting high and buying prostitutes with his life savings and then he committed suicide. The six page letter told of his horrific act upon his girlfriend and that she tasted like chicken. Back to the topic… we know that these hatemongers exist and why do we allow their words to surprise us? It is nothing worst than what they have already said and done to us.
Man I am so tired of us crying over spilled milk. Everytime some one says something crazy or what we believe to be crazy we want an apology. We get upset. Hey man the fact of the matter is we give others the power to down play us. We give others the authority to label us because of our actions and lifestyle. Because of our failure to take advatage of the things given to us. We are looked upon as we appear. The media only focuses on the negative true but the negative is what we’re mostly giving them. Their are Afro Amer everywhere doing everything when will we take resonsiblity for ourselves. Will something devestating have to happen to get such an response. And the real question is what will we do for or about our youth who refuses to finsh school or get any type of eduction. That’s the real question.
The whole premise of vouchers was to allow faith based groups to get tax money (taken from the public schools) while still holding on to their religious standards to exclude any student who does not fit their faith based requirements (wrong color financial status country of origin or sexual orientaiton). This not only takes money from public schools but will put money into the pockets of the already wealthy classes and at the expense of the poor inner city schools.
When it comes to public schools here is how it works when money is lost to budget cuts. The wealthy suburban school may have to go without getting new bleachers or video equipment for the filmmaking class; but inner city schools go without having that leak in the roof repaired or being able to rent modular rooms to relieve overcrowed classes.
People are going to say what they when they want it no matter how much or many times we call them racist. I am black and not defending him but there are cenrtain people I am racist with just like everyone else. If you don’t like his comment then do no support him and his website. I am sick and tired of people getting upset over comments said about race gender or religion I would prefer them to come out and say it instead of smiling and pretending in your face that they are not racist. They are way more important things to get upset about and want to fight a battle then over a racist comment because at the end of the night people who are racist are going to wake up the morning and still feel the smae way the felt the day before. We can not change people minds or how they feel about certain things but we can stop supporting there business. I hope I did not offend anyone with my comment I am just speaking on how I feel about this situation.
I am in full support of Byrne - I would like my niece to go to a private all girl school right now!.. I would only pray for support and additional funds to make that happen. If public schools could consider upgrading to the element of an all girl and or all boy school it would benefit our children greatly. I am finding my niece to be distracted by boys and being with the in crowd at school. She’s a smart girl but children have a different focus and priority and I feel like they should not be distracted with the feeling of sexual curiosity or trying to impress anyone all for the attention of the opposite sex. Voucher’s would be so helpful to me in paying for an all girl learning enviornment and I am in full support of it and if kids can’t get a decent education then he’s right- it is the end of their lives!
I am not mad at this guy we all know that if you drop out of high school there is not chance that you will do as well in life as you would with even a high school diploma. Look at the way the world is going we all know that we all need a advance degree you to make it in this world we are a part of today. So how could anyone be mad at a statement that’s true we see it everyday in our world now don’t we. Some things need to be sad and i think it’s just because a white man said it look how upset so many people of color get when bill Cosby have made statements about we as black people doing a better job with our own children all together we all know we would like to be the ones making the statement. Stand up my Sister’s and my Brother’s be right and do right our children are still watching us so let’s teach them that the truth is still the truth no mater who says it it is what it is. Love you all. Keep your heads up high and we all can and will make it. Jeff Lewis your Brother for Detroit. MI.
jb i feel what you are saying but on the same token what makes you think that by your niece attending an all girl school that she wouldn’t be distracted by experimenting with other girls who do not come from the same background as her? I mean no matter how you flip the coin there are going to be uncertainties. I say sit her down and talk to her school her about life and let her know how important it is to get that education and that sex has its place after marriage. If she feels the desire to be disobedient and disrespectful wax that a$$. Nothing wrong with a good old fashion a$$ cutting.
The thing about chasing rabbits is that while you can deinventory the energy cache of the average human being or entity there really is no history of humans catching a rabbit without aide of some weapon or trapping device. Therefore we ought to be careful that we do not exhaust ourselves chasing rabbits. I think the speaker demonstrated little forethought of the impact of his word choice. However the context and tenor of the message is similar to what parents social activists and even ministers from the pulpit might be guilty of stating about our youth who trivialize and/or trick off their opportunity for education. Perhaps it stings more when one of means and of another ethnic population utters the economic eulogy of under-education. It remains true that African Americans in USofA begin life at a gross disadvantage. Failing to secure at least a High school diploma is a life sentence without bars. I think he is a man of means and rather than focus on vilifying him for his ignorance to the social ramifications of his graphic indictment we ought to challenge him to act on his awareness by committing resources. Dollars will accomplish far more than apologies if you compare the net worth of both on paper. I would pick currency over rhetoric every time. If he meant well in misspeaking let us allow him a chance to demonstrate how well-intended his remarks were. Commit some funds towards the remedy. Mr. CEO!!!
First (2) wrongs don’t make a right. Byrne was wrong for saying what he said and the NAACP was wrong for trying to represent US down here in La the NAACP is a joke and that @?#%@*~ is only speaking how he feel. And today it’s ok for whitepeople to diss blacks. ’cause ain’t nothing’s gonna be done about it but outrage talking. So continue to disrespect/torture/kill/wrongfully incarcerate us/deny us our human rights and one day just one day these oppressed/degraded/unfitbeings will rise up and give you crackers all the HELL you gave us for 400 years!!!
First. I’m a Black Man. I agree with him 10,000% He didn’t need to mention white kids that drop out. Their chances are very different than that of kids of color who don’t have an education. I believe that white kids should be educated as well but what goes on in this country puts men and women of color that are not educated in far worse positions than that of their white peers. He’s right and as a whole we are too worried about being politically correct. I think what he is saying is lets fix the failures of the public education system in this country. We are moving back to where the poor are getting a poor education and not provide the chance to succeed. You don’t have to like what he said but we all need to listen.
I BELIEVE WHAT HE SAID WAS TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT. HOW MANY SUCESSFUL HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUTS DO YOU KNOW? ” SO GIVE THEM A FIGHTING CHANCE AND THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES AS THE MAJORITY. OR ELSE ITS BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS” (WHITE AMERICA) NOW THE NAACP DONT CARE ABOUT US. THEY SHOULDA BEEN THERE WITH THE JENA6 LEADING PROTESTS BEFORE THE BIG NAMES GOT INVOLVED. THEY SHOULD’NT ALLOW THE COUNTIES TO RIP OFF OUR ELDERLY OF THEIR PROPERTIES THAT THEY WORK SO HARD FOR. WHERE ARE THEY WHEN BROTHERS AND SISTERS ARE BEING MURDERED BY OUR OWN? OH YEAH THEY HAVE A TELETHON ONCE A YEAR. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE YEAR? BROTHERS AND SISTERS WAKE UP AND READ THRU THIS BULL@#$^. PATRICK BYRNES IS ACTUALLY TRYING TO HELP IN THIS CASE. ARGUING FOR HELP FOR OUR CHILDREN? WHO’S SPEAKING ON HIS BEHALF BESIDES US? THINK ABOUT IT!!!!
I know plenty of successful high school drop outs. They own their own businesses and are doing quite well. Back in the days lots of the elderly folks could not go to high school. They had to work the fields and order for their families to survive. Take my mother for instance she was left to raise 5 siblings by the time she got to 5th grade. She had to drop out of school. She sent her brothers and sisters to school while she worked the fields and housework. She saw to it that each of them received their high school diplomas. She later married my father and they started not 1 but 2 businesses which have blossomed and are thriving today. I’m an off spring branch of those businesses. Success comes to those who believe in themselves. I know people with masters and doctorates and they only jobs they can find is mickey dees both black and white. Although I do not knock education because school benefited me …I will say that its not the knowledge from books that gets you where you need to be its the faith that you have in the Creator and the belief that you have within yourself that opens locked doors.
