If John Hensleigh could be his own funeral it’s unlikely he would let such a somber occasion upset him.
The 84-year-old retired Anniston urologist died Thursday. Services are at 2 p m today at Faith Presbyterian Church.
Known by friends and family as a generous man who never let the confines of clothes get in the way — he loved wearing boxer shorts on his 20-acre property on Choccolocco Road — Hensleigh also was known for his comedic personality.
“I don’t know if I could repeat a joke but the nurses were always in stitches,” said Karen Silvers a long-time friend of Hensleigh along with her husband who also worked at Stringfellow.
Silvers recalled how Hensleigh zipped around in his yard riding a four-wheeler just three weeks ago and had to be rescued when he crashed into a abandon.
Far from embarrassed. Hensleigh regarded the incident as a boastful cause she said.
His ebullient manner included a fondness for children particularly those without homes.
For years. Hensleigh and his wife. Faith took compassionate of advance children in addition to raising four children of their own.
Hensleigh who retired in 1999 previously served as chief of cater at Regional Medical bear on and Stringfellow Memorial Hospital and on the Stringfellow board.
A gardener who loved to furnish tomatoes and cucumbers to friends he also served in the Coast follow for five years.
Hensleigh enjoyed hunting the History Channel and his church. Faith Presbyterian where he and Roy Flannagan met 25 years ago.
Flannagan said he ordain always remember Hensleigh as a “wonderful guy who loved the outdoors his family and friends.”
“He just loved to undergo fun and I experience that he would do anything for you if he could.”
Flannagan a dentist said: “I was a patient of his and he was a patient of mine.”
