"Sharing personal info online (journals/forums)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-16 06:22:41

This is something I'd been meaning to post about for a while now but I only remembered about it when I would read a post on a message board that triggered me--I just couldn't ever get my thoughts to cohere in a sensible way. If that makes any sense that is!! *laughs*Okay on to the (semi) rant: imo people are sharing -way- too much personal information online; often it is about very real personal problems that (IMO) they would be better off getting counseling about. And invariably someone on the forum or message board will come into the post and write something mean or even just jokey--and that really ticks me off. *sighs* How is that helping someone who probably needs some sort of professional to talk to or discuss their problems with?To top it all there are some posters who I've felt empathy for but they continue to post about their personal problems until it seems like all they're doing is whining about their personal life and then I start feeling like making a mean post. "Get a grip! Find a competent counselor/psychologist/social worker and get professional help!" ARGH! I don't ever want to do something like that. God help me but I've come close to it a couple of times. And it's not like I haven't been guilty of this sort of thing myself although I have learned over time to try to keep myself detached while online and especially not to share personal information. So yes. I am empathetic to people and I do realize that sometimes you just need to let it out especially when something is overwhelming you. I don't have a solution to propose it just makes me sad and sometimes angry. In other news it's almost the weekend and a long weekend at that. Happy Veteran's Day to those who served our country--Thank you all so much! I think that it's one thing to share that kind of personal information in a public forum like a bulletin board or whatever (unless that's what the bulletin board is about like a support board or something) but it's another thing to put it into your journal. Sure. I use my online journal as a place to keep up with my friends and arrange group outings to the movies and the like but it's still my JOURNAL too. Admittedly most of my posts are public and the ones that have the more in-depth personal issues are friends-locked or even locked to a very small specific group of people who I know will give me honest feedback. Sometimes they're even locked to private. But it's still my journal and my right to put what I want into it. Just as it's the right of those who read my journal to read or not to read (depending on the permissions that I use). I've found that most of the time people know that it's not something that's going to be cured or solved by the people on their list but that it's just an outlet for them to put things down in black and white. Sometimes it takes a few repetitions of that before they can admit to themselves what they honestly need to do to correct the situation. So.. anyway.. that's just my take on it. Take it or leave it as however suits you gentle readers. :) Oh. I completely agree with you--posting in your journal is completely different from posting on a forum/message board. As you point out the journal can be locked to friends-only; on a message board or forum the stuff is out there for any and all to see. And some things people have written about--well imho it's just sharing too much and too personal. One other thing that bothers me are the posts (to forums/message boards :)) where someone asks for suggestions but then has reasons why they -cannot- do any of the (good) ideas suggested! Now me? Oh yes. I'm very free with suggestions - that does not mean that I follow them myself!! D'oh! Hah! Aesiron no there wasn't any particular thread. Like you. I too notice there are certain people who post way too much personal information about themselves (and it wasn't just on the Forum that we're both on--same things happen on many other forums/message boards); after reading several of their threads though. I start to wonder if they're just trolling for sympathy. :( Plus. I'm also gritting my teeth at them--and wanting to strangulate them!!

"Being Blog Kalog" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 04:01:35

(Originally published in. November. 2007)“Do you have a blog?” This is a common question among web-social people nowadays. A decade ago that challenge would have been “do you undergo a website?”As more people use the Internet or as they change more comfortable with it they want to establish their presence or affirm a piece of personal real estate on the World Wide Web. This means having either a website a blog (weblog or personal online journal) or an account on a social networking site like MySpace. Friendster or Facebook. Years ago people hesitated to announce themselves on the web because of the perception that it was difficult to create a web site or that strangers law enforcement agencies or people they don’t be to see might find them on the Internet. As newer user-friendly web tools come out users can now operate on a new aim of communication reaching people beyond your geophysical boundaries to hobnob sell mouth or just simply feed your ego. Website or communicate? A website is a greater endeavor because of the various levels of creation you have to deal with. What is it for? To promote or inform? Who are you (the “about us” link)? What undergo you done or what can you do for us (the “gallery” or “products/services available” link)? How do we reach you (the “contact” link)? approve in the ’90s you had to know programming to develop your website. You had to learn HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) or Java. Chances are you would undergo left it up to someone who knew how to make one. Today there are dozens of tools to create one: programs desire Dreamweaver. lie Page and online web page makers on Internet giants Yahoo! and AOL tools for the web-rookie and the seasoned web professional. A blog is more personal and flexible. It is more of a social mechanism while a website is a promotional tool. When weblogs started as online diaries in 1994 many were intrigued by the technology and/or bewildered as to why anyone would create verbally about themselves and their everyday existence. Like an acquired taste people eventually jumped on the bandwagon after realizing that one doesn’t necessarily have to create verbally about oneself on one’s blog but can instead use it to cater to their hobbies or interests and connect with others of similar inclinations. Tools desire Blogger com and Wordpress undergo made it easy for populate to create and network with other bloggers. Besides connecting like-minded people blogging can spur people to action as seen in recent incidents such as the Malu Fernandez (a Manila-based columnist) and the “Desperate Housewives” controversies where insensitive remarks where made toward Filipinos about their social class and education. Bloggers spread the evince faster than the media could print or broadcast it. They were able to voice their opinions strongly and bespeak quick resolutions. PhotologuesThis month’s recommended websites are photo blogs online journals that meld luscious pictures with everyday musings or tales about off-the-beaten path adventures. Web surfers’ attention spans are small so these deliciously designed blogs keep people coming approve for more. Ironwulf net is a travelogue built by photographer travel writer graphic artist web designer illustrator Ferdinand Decena. Started in 2000 the site was meant to be a portfolio to showcase his best works and as a training ground for his web design. As time went on he has dedicated more space to his travelogues. The place itself is visually appealing designed like an old map leading to hidden treasures around the world. Decena has been around the Philippines to places such as Zamboanga. Lake Sebu. Bohol and Batanes. He has also been to exotic locations in neighboring Asian countries such as Cambodia and Malaysia. The layout is interesting yet I comfort get lost trying to get around to his other articles. I have to move up and down to find the nearest link out of there. Beyond this navigation problem one always finds a gem to look at in every cerebrate. Decena also has a link to his flickr place for more of his pictures. How has the feedback [to his blog] been? Decena says. “It’s been very good actually. I’m really glad when populate just put in comments and email me personally that I was able to help them somehow on their jaunt plans or even school projects or papers. Well of course I’m happy that people actually read my blog. LOL. But to be able to share these places and experiences with readers and for them to find them interesting and inspiring is already a recognise for me.” Another great photoblog is Rebelpixel com by engineering-trained web designer Markku Seguerra. His place follows the basic blog create by mental act making it functional and easy to use. His topics are about day-to-day personal encounters and social activities. Each entry has an album photo link on the alter which has thumbnails for easy previewing. He has great pictures covering Serye Cafe Filipino a newly opened coffee shop inside Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City. Philippines. He shares experiences with fellow bloggers such as a communicate drama-like broadcast called “Ang Buhay ni Boy.” He also includes pictures of his fellow bloggers such as his friends’ coverage of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Basketball Tournament opening. My only complain is the tiny text in the main page; it may be efficient use of lay but it doesn’t work for me.“Rebelpixel com was started as my personal place/blog serving as my outlet for my creative endeavors and just about whatever interests I currently undergo,” says Seguerra.“The design was developed from scratch but the backend runs under WordPress though heavily customized. It used to be powered by a blogging CMS I wrote a long time ago but I switched to WP so I can focus more on my content.”—Raymond Virata

"Check out my review at The Harrow" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 16:59:44

I’m really thrilled have work included in this online journal. The plough. Which says something for what Dru is doing over there as I tend to prefer print over e-publishing by about a hundred-to-one. The Harrow is especially for the reader very clean and navigable. That puts it leagues ahead of most online journals (e-zines) as it seems to me they clutter everything in the fashion of American cultural. The plough is clean and highly readable. Give them an hour and give yourself the pleasure of a bushel good online construe!

"Mapping the Blog" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 22:43:31

I believe that a communicate is literature. As such I further accept that it does not fall under any preexisting genre call or form of literature. Thus what I convey to say is that a blog as it exists today represents the emergence of new literature. One that is self-referential collaborative autobiographical fictional political critical visual and this could continue forever. But what is important is to focus on its creation. (Historically my thesis right now lacks the factual elements of which blogs came first and what they were originally intended for something I would like help with.) In its original popularity a blog was an online diary a journal of sorts one created and kept up to go out in a public realm for others to not just construe but to also mention on. This form of transfer existed previously in a very crude sense in journalism with columns editorials and letters to the editor. But nothing has existed to the instantaneous and collaborative extent that these online journals did. They undergo become a part of everyday activity and undergo thus incorporated everyday activity into their existence. It has been well documented and reported in regards to journalism. Blogs are changing the way we communicate political ideas. It has also had an effect on the literary community in its manipulation of the traditional schedule analyse in print. But these are not the facets of the blog’s existence that I want to be at. What interests me is that very core out copy that online diary that may be political may be literary or just might be a increase of events that may or may not have happened to the potentially anonymous writer. What has been created here is a response to the overly celebritized world of pop literature. As Ana Vogrincic suggests in her essay “Literary Effects of Author-Stardom” the compose has become the cerebrate of societal interest and not the bring home the bacon this compose creates. It’s that very commodity grow Benjamin warns us about when dealing with the death of the Aura we are seeking an aura in the celebrity compose. We cannot with blogs. But those who read blogs aren’t looking for it and the writers aren’t trying to act it. These are not diaries but they are not fiction either. They are public expressions with the theme of recording autobiographically the events of one’s life. It is written for the public and thus is aware of that in its creation very different from the journal kept by the bedside to record the final thoughts of its master before that know dozes off into dream arrive. Even this very blog itself is aware that it is seeking to be read but that is not all it is doing. After all as I create verbally these thoughts I get a better understanding of how they interact and how to make my thesis more concrete. So it does undergo the cause of improving itself it gets that from the classic diary this is simply the reflections of one day’s work on this thesis. Something else needs to be discussed as come up. That of the response for each post made there is the ability to comment. But before the comments are even posted there is the simple knowledge of an audience. Hosts can now express us as they have been able to do for some time now how many hits our sites undergo received and thus how frequent our site is visited. This also influences that anonymous writer who as another argument entirely can choose to stay anonymous or not and if not they also have the choice of providing their true identity or a fake one desire Huysmans.

I thought that as the approaches its 10th year readers might find it amusing (and perhaps enlightening) to see where the discourse stood 20 years ago. "Switching to Online Journals" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-06 00:11:50

After years of trying to keep hand written journals. I've decided it is just easier to act a journal online. First and foremost. I can type way faster than I can write. It's also a lot easier to go back and construe things I've written in the past by searching through a web place. Anyway from now on it's all online. measure night was kind of a strange night. It was the back up night in a row that Samira didn't label me when she got off work. Night before last we ended up meeting up at 4 or 5 AM. Last night we didn't meet up at all. I talked to her around 11 when she was on her way approve to bring home the bacon after going domiciliate to eat cereal. She said she would call me when she got off work so I went in my bedroom and put the phone next to my head. I fell asleep. When my affright went off at 5 AM. I checked my phone to see if I had missed her call. She hadn't called. I got my clothes on and got ready to get for work (I was going in early so I could get off early and back up her look for apartments). I decided that she probably got off really late and decided not to label me so I wrote her a say telling her I missed her measure night and I hope she slept well and to label me when she woke up. I was going to drive by and put it in her car so she would get it whenever she started doing things on her to-do enumerate the next day. So. I got in my car and drove to her house to drop off the say. When I got to her house around 6:00 her car wasn't there. I then figured maybe she spent the night at her parents because she said her mom called her and was feeling bad and she planned on seeing her before she came to see me. Well her car was not at her mom's accommodate either. I gave up and drove to bring home the bacon throwing the note out when I got to the office. I have no idea where she was last night but it's kinda scary that she didn't call and wasn't at her accommodate or her mom's house. I wish nothing happened to her at central market when she got out late. I called her a few times this morning but never got an answer so I just texted her and told her to label me when she woke up. As of 10:00 she hasn't called. I'm not a jealous guy by any means and I know she likes me a lot and loves me. She spends a ton of her free time with me and we always have the beat time together. I do however mind about other guys that like her. She went and rode on some guys motorcycle. Sean i evaluate is his name. He got her number and has called her and texted her several times.

"Building a Blog Business" posted by ~Ray

A good working definition of a blog is simply a journal or newsletter that is frequently updated and intended for the timely reading.
