Recent investigate from the Sloan Consortium shows that some traditional professors are comfort skeptical of online learning reports: "Just as professors undergo long questioned whether students learn as well via mail-order coursework as they do in a classroom today's educators often doubt the merits of a system that renders their physical presence unnecessary. Just 33% of respondents to the Sloan survey said faculty at their institutions support the determine and legitimacy of online learning; that's up from 28% in 2002."I'm not convinced by those who claim that it provides the same aim of value-added knowledge that a traditional classroom does," says Philip Altbach director of The Boston College Center for International Higher Education."I don't think the data is all that good yet and as a traditionalist. I just query. I'm not saying it's hooey or a problem but the jury is comfort a little bit out." People are always hesitant to include new ways of doing things. However teachers are slowly beginning to show their give. Hopefully two things will come about: the quality of online classes will improve and professors will change state more willing to depart from tradition. "Student Budget for Correspondence Courses and Other Circumstances" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 03:58:14

Regardless of whether a student is taking courses on campus or through correspondence chew over certain college expenses cannot be included in the calculate. Miscellaneous and personal expenses cannot be factored into the calculate. Only tuition fees book & supplies allowance dependent care expenses and a limited room and board amount can be included. Your school will determine these expenses. Room and board can be included in the calculate for up to three semesters (or equivalent). However these costs cannot be given for more than two consecutive semesters at any one educate. In other words if you are attending less than half measure on a regular basis after one year's worth (two semesters) dwell and board expenses cannot be added the next semester but can be used one more semester thereafter. A correspondence course is defined as a paper-based domiciliate study course where instructional materials are delivered via mail. Any course delivered by video tape or video disc is also considered a home study course the school offers the same course to on-campus students. Also if your school offers more than 50% of all courses as telecommunications or correspondence courses telecommunications courses are also counted as correspondence chew over. I would anticipate that most of you do not go into the correspondence study category since so many courses are now online but it's important to know that if you are taking correspondence courses to be considered for federal student aid you must still be enrolled in a degree schedule (cerebrate's bachelor's or master's). Also if you are taking a combination of online and correspondence courses your budget could be reduced depending on how many courses of each you are enrolled for any given term. analyse with your school if you are taking a combination. Only tuition fees and books and supplies can be included in a budget for correspondence study. jaunt expenses and dwell/board expenses cannot be used unless a student is required to do residential training. Miscellaneous and personal expenses are not used in any circumstance. Incarcerated students cannot borrow federal student loans. Nor can they be considered for Pell Grant if incarcerated in a federal or state penal institution. There are few incarcerated students if any who can acquire any write of federal financial aid. Only tuition fees and books and supplies can be used in the budget for these students. Sometimes a student receives a tuition waiver or other form of assistance that pays some or all educational expenses. Examples of these are teacher waivers and JTPA grants. How these are treated depends on your educate. If your school does not charge you what the assistance covers then that expense cannot be included in your budget. If they do charge you the expense can be included in your budget with an offsetting resource on your financial aid earn. This is confusing so let me provide examples. waiver for the fall semester. The billing office receives this tuition waiver prior to the start of school so when your first bill arrives only $100 for fees is charged to you. The $500 tuition charge was not applied because it was waived. Therefore the financial aid office cannot include tuition in your calculate because it was never charged to you. In the same scenario with tuition waiver you receive the first bill with a $500 tuition rush and $100 fee rush. But this measure the tuition waiver of $500 (100%) appears on your bill as a ascribe which pays the tuition charge. In this instance the financial aid office can use the $500 tuition in your budget because it was charged to you. Hopefully this will give you some idea of what financial aid professionals broach with on a daily basis. As more and more non-traditional courses become available it's a myriad of rules for financial aid professionals. I often get calls from students who are considering a be of different types of courses. There's no simple answer! I have been a financial aid advisor for nearly 25 years now! Time really does fly. Like other e-learners. I acquired my Bachelor of Arts degree and my know of Science degree while working full time and raising a family. My coursework consisted of classroom instruction online and independent study courses and weekend classes. I began in financial aid as a secretary and have worked my way to senior level financial aid advisor at a public four year college in the Midwest. When I began in 1984 we did not have computers so I have seen the evolution of technology and its force on education and financial aid. My preserve and I undergo four children in our household. My daughter and stepson are both in college. My son and stepdaughter are high school freshman. I look forward to being a part of eLearners com and given the chance to educate students especially “non-traditional” students on the ins-and-outs of financial aid. It is a daunting assign to analyze understand and apply federal financial aid regulations these days. Hopefully the information I provide ordain back up. I think it's been mentioned here before on the importance of having backup files for your computer just in case you should undergo a bad hard drive virus or other little ugly mishap but it's worth saying again have a plan "B". This week I have been out of commission due to a nasty little Trojan horse that ran on my system. My antivirus caught it but not before the damage had move to my system registry thus corrupting the PC enough to warrant a fresh start. Unfortunately I have lost my office suite and since I am moving it is sitting in a box in some store far far from here. So it looks desire I ordain have a little assay tonight in attempting to find such freeware and shareware as Abi Word or the like to use in lieu of Microsoft until I can get back to 100%. I was able to discriminate the virus to keep it from spreading to the My Documents folder where all of my work and music is stored so I ran to Target and picked up a little 80GB external USB hard drive and quickly backed everything up to charge tonight. So yeah. I'm going to be a little behind the curve this week but thank goodness for Thanksgiving perhaps I ordain have a little leniency from the instructor and be given another day or two as the educate has no classes for 2 days. I honestly don't know if this applies to the online grad students but it should by golly. So the lessons learned this week?
