It's being touted as the first novel about North Korea to be published in English inspired by Hyejin's friendship with a real-life "Jia" now living in China. The novel has been published by Midnight Editions an imprint devoted to enlarging "our understanding of human rights by publishing works from regions where repression and censorship are currently endangering creative expression." However this novel is rarely didactic or preachy. Somehow Hyejin a South Korean has managed to act a heart-felt portrait of not just a person but a country one largely misunderstood in the west. That "Jia" and what happens to her is based on truth makes the experience of reading the novel all the more harrowing. Her parents dead. Jia spends her youth in a prison because of supposed crimes by her grandparents. From there she finds her way to an orphanage and then a move school. The move school leads to her performance in the World Festival of Youth and Students which is attended by North Korea's dictator. Kim Jong Il. There's pathos aplenty in these sections but the tension becomes particularly strong when Jia decides to try to escape North Korea entirely. Heinz Insu Fenkl compose of the extraordinary memoir  sums up my own feelings about the novel in his cover blurb: "Vivid and poignantly understated. Jia is authentic and heartbreaking; it is an absolute must read for those who wish to understand the tragedy of North Korea." --Jeff
