Sony Portable Reader PRS-500/505 E ink. 6-inch SVGA 800x600. 4 (PRS-500) or 8 (PRS-505) grey scales The pass magazine of the Guardian has a gadget clinic Q&A column. Today someone asked about mobile reading devices and was given some rather dated advice:"Gadget clinic Bobbie Johnson technology correspondent The Guardian Saturday December 1 2007 Q: I want a portable reader but when I tried to buy one online. I was told they displace only to the US. Any ideas?A: The idea of reading a book digitally might seem heresy to bibliophiles but eBook readers are getting better all the time. The Sony PRS-500 Reader is one of the most popular but if you can't get one from the US try eBay where they go for around Ł150. Buying books can be tricky though since Sony's book store accepts only US credit cards. Another more expensive option is the iRex Iliad (around Ł450). It has a touchscreen and built-in wifi - Libresco is its British distributor (iliadreader co uk). Some populate swear by using their phones which might be a cheaper option but you'd probably prefer one with a big screen a Palm Treo or iPhone say."Clearly Bobbie Johnson has not yet heard of the PRS 505 nor of the Bookeen Cybook. I accept. The Cybook would undergo been the best alternative to the Reader for Europeans.

"Nine Tips for the Self-Taught Travel Photographer" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-16 06:22:44

You know you secretly want to be a National Geographic photographer. But it takes a lot more than hoping. Self-learning is fun and cheap but takes discipline. Check out these nine steps and resources. 1. Study photo books. Go to the public library or local book store and look at photo books while asking questions such as: “What makes this photo great?” “Why are these photos side by side?” “Why does this photographer only shoot B&W?” If you do this on a regular basis it can dramatically improve your photography and is enjoyable! 2. Take notes. Self learning can lack focus unless you take notes so you can follow up on questions and ideas. I started with a list of specific things I wanted to learn about photography. “What is White Balance and how do I use it?” “How slow can I hand hold the camera without getting a blurry photo?” “What is the rule of 1/3?” etc. Many years later I’m still adding new questions to this same piece of paper.3. Podcasts. Check out: Jeff Curto’s and his is a cooperative of distinctive photographers worldwide. A must see. Click for more of of the best photography podcasts. 5 iTunes U Ever wanted to study “Photography as Inquiry” at MIT or “Documentary Studies” at Duke but don’t have the time not to mention the money? With you can put them on you laptop and study them at your leisure for FREE! iTunes U is new and is adding courses all the time. Be be sure to search for “photography” and see what classes guest speakers and MOMA events come up. If you have iTunes you already have iTunes U most people just don’t know it. These are real college classes and have a lot of good learning inside but just like real college classes they aren’t always thrilling. Pick your classes and teachers carefully. 6. Self CritiqueThis is no doubt the hardest part of self learning. Self critique means many things. For example when evaluating a specific photograph asking “how could this be better?” can also be translated into “what have I learned in the last 6 months?” The nature of critique is that 2 ideas are better than one and 3 better than 2. This is why no one is truly “self taught.” We need others’ ideas and opinions to grow. 7. Getting Kind but Critical Opinions Luckily there are good places to get feedback and opinions about your work outside of learning institutions. A good place to start is someone close to you someone you trust to be honest and kind but also critical. Another good option is the internet. There are many photo-sharing communities such as that offer quality and critical feedback for your photos for free. Another good option is posting your photos to a travel community such as and begin a dialog with other travel photographers whose work you admire. The best option is to find a professional who can give you personal attention. Try a local camera shop or even look in the phone book for photographers in your area.8. Workshops as reinforcement. Nearly everyone who is serious about photography takes workshops from time to time. This includes top pros! There are only 2 ways to be finished learning about photography give up or die. It’s this ongoing struggle that keeps us engaged and youthful and it’s never too soon nor too late to take a workshop. 9. Let the Path be your Guide Don’t wait till you are ready to start being a photographer. Let the path tell you when you are ready. Start showing your work in shows; start trying to get it published today. You will get rejections and make mistakes but it is without a doubt the fastest way to learn.

"Ulysses: Andrew Schoultz" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 01:57:27

The book itself is impressive. It is 10.5 inches tall and 180 pages deep full color hard cover and even has a manifold gatefold (where the pages are twice as large and can be unfolded. It has got everything you could be in an art book: large works details installations murals drawings gallery exhibitions collaborations sketches and photographs. It gets even better; there are no less than four essays about the work and the artists. All for only $30! I'd say my only complaints are that a few of the photos are slightly off-focus (one printed as a two-page move) and the hardcover is color and can get grungy pretty quickly if you handle your books like I (and our customers) do. Schoultz's work draws from a lexicon of images and icons that are used and reimagined in endless combinations. Pirate ships channelise stumps and branches birdhouses elephants pyramids eyeballs. Trojan horses telecommunicate poles birds bottles and shacks are rendered in stylized textures of wood brick magma ocean waves clouds and cyclones. The overall effect on some larger pieces can be visual overwhelming in its crowds of details but the scope of the bring home the bacon is often breathtaking beyond the impressiveness of the massively repetitive dilate renderings. The book covers the past 10 years of Schoultz's artistic output not including his graffiti persona which he keeps completely separate from this bring home the bacon. While the large murals and seriously epic artworks are great. I find some of smaller simpler works (that are often parts of larger installations) the most appealing and approachable. There is plenty of details to pour over and many pages of color and color sketches which show change surface advance exploration into the imagery. As cohesive as this large be of bring home the bacon is the murals and the gallery installations and the works on paper and the sketches do rest apart from one another. Alas. Schoultz's bring home the bacon does not often alter itself easily to 10x7" reproductions. I really don't evaluate a exceed job could have been done trying to close in works of this measure in a enter desire this but the scope and coat of some of the art simply does not go across as loud as it would in person. Still without a book desire this how many of us would have seen his murals in Indonesia. All in all. Ulysses is one fantastic art book. Andrew Schoultz's art is really fun to look at and the quality of the publication is just phenomenal. It was published in 2006 by in San Francisco. It is currently distributed by Ginko and measure blow so it should be available at most quality artist's bookstores. Only 3000 copies of the 1st edition were printed so for only $30 you would be a fool to not get yourself a copy. Ulysses: Departures. Journeys. & Returns. The Artwork of Andrew Schoultz is available alter now in the. Priority shipping with tracking is only $5.50 in the US. Links:

"Interesting Research on Online Gaming" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-25 17:59:53

Just came across a link that Courtney posted in a comment. Great cerebrate. This studies and surveys online gamers and their psychology. For some reason this place looks like butt on my check but the fascinating info is worth highlighting the text to read. I especially enjoyed the essay on how men and women differently. You go “oh yeah” when you construe the facts desire Those players whose goal becomes to “be the best” are the most likely to destroy out whereas the ones who use it as a social drive will be around for a while. Anyway definitely worth a look. I ordain post it in my too. On another note. I was at the bookstore today and saw a map of Los Angeles ON CLOTH. I can’t find a cerebrate to one on the internet no be how hard I search and I’m so annoyed I didn’t buy it! It was so much desire the Ultima cloth maps! I ordain go buy it and act a picture. I have to agree with you about how if you’re in it for the social aspect you’ll stick around. That’s what I’ve done and I’ve been playing the same game for 4 years now. To this wizened old coot of 37. I noticed the social aspect thing to online gaming back in the old MUD days when they would get run on university mainframes late ’80s early 90’s IIRC (MUD means Multi User Dungeon to you young whippersnappers… geeze kids nowdays ^_^). Sure it was Zork desire text adventures but you could still group up and go contend cram - even then a lot of populate would spend a good accumulate of their time hanging out with their friends and not fighting anything. Well object each other but that didn’t change either. Some of the research or should I say comments expressed could be directly related to our education system. It has been a growing turn in my years of teaching to see a higher percentage of women in leadership roles in schools both secondary and elementary. I look at the top ten students at local high schools when they are published in the paper and a percentage of women are there too. On the same token the idea that female players desire to assort with people they have grouped before doesn’t affect either. There is evidence of that in other areas of life besides gaming i e going to the bathroom in groups and I think girls be stick with the people that they are comfortable with rather than reach out to someone new every time. Don’t take my generalizations the do by way it is just some things I have observed by coaching girls sports. I evaluate we all like to hang with populate we are comfortable with but even within a team of 10,12 or 20 girls have their cliques and it is more prominent than with guys. And I don’t want to get into it when they fight. Ironically. I evaluate many of the same qualities could bear on to any gaming situation and not just online. It is just online has the benefit of not seeing the other populate you play with. “hey it works for the alter.” Those are my thoughts and not yours so until next time… Maybe I should believe trying WoW. I’ve never played it and the way everyone talks about it (forever). I should have started 10 years ago. I am an Age of Empires junky. But its not really an MMO. Its an up to 8 player online game taht usually lasts 1-2 hours per game. Most sites bring in and rate your compete but it just doesnt sound the same as WoW or that Star Wars game I act hearing about. Anyone got any ideas for the best way for me to get my feet wet? Or should I just command clear? Advice? Warning? Thoughts? Thanks! Ben. I love Age of Empires. Age of Mythology you would probably love the Starcraft and Warcraft I-III games as well. My suggestion is just move in if you have some friends talking about it to you. go away with them but desire any game it depends what you want out of it. If you be to change state and enjoy the game. WoW can get pretty involved if you want it to be. Others will tell you how to “create” your engrave and change surface instruct you how to compete. (in any upcoming episodes Felicia?). Until they pay for your account do what you want to do and have fun. Always bequeath it is a bet and you’ll undergo fun fun fun…you know the rest. Until next measure… I’ve been playing these online games for quite a while now (I don’t intend on dating myself tyvm so don’t ask how desire). Anyhoo… I’ve go to the conclusion that gals are also more likely to dip in crafting but not necessarily master it. If guys end to craft they often times ordain know it and max everything out. Gals on the other transfer will dink around with the various professions dress a few times and pay more time making every single item they can rather than rushing through the item creation to get to the next aim… if that makes any comprehend… I undergo to say thier investigate was interesting and in my experience very true. I have been a leader in every guild I undergo been involved in. The 3 raids I have been a move.

"Finally got the "Shut Up and Sing" Dixie Chick's DVD." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-20 01:17:34

"Do not act for leaders; do it alone person to person." care Teresa I didn't want to contract it and give them money so I bought it online from a used book store. That way only the bookstore gets the money. Anyway for those of you who didn't construe the post about this communicate being in the opening scene of the Dixie Chick's DVD it'sWell. I had speculated that it must have been my Houston Chronicle communicate they were reading but they clearly show this communicate on the computer screen. But they must have clicked over to my out loud: "It's too bad really. I loved listening to the Dixie Chicks. I loved their music. change surface this new angry song is good." And they all laugh. I don't experience why that's funny though. They construe through some comments but I evaluate they edited in comments from other blogs because one of the comments had the "F" evince and I don't accept that at either communicate. The editing doesn't identify between what I wrote and what commenters said. Which is bothersome to me because it gives the impression that I either wrote those things or let them be said at my blog. But I figure the ones who watch this movie probably would dislike me anyway so no big broach. It's fun to see my communicate on check like that though. I may even try to get through the whole movie sometime this week. "America is not at war. Our warriors are at war. America is at the mall."
