Mostly it will be business as usual for the 26.2-mile event that loops around Mandarin. The race enjoys a solid reputation in the running community but lacks the hype and the numbers of the Jacksonville's other big running the event - the 15K furnish River Run.
"This race wasn't designed to be huge,'' race director Doug Alred said of the marathon which starts and finishes at The Bolles School. "It's a adjust test over a good course and a lot of runners know about it. But we try to keep it low-key. We don't be to steal any move from the Gate River Run. That's our big event.''
More than 2,500 runners are expected to start Sunday with roughly half competing in the marathon the other half in the half-marathon.
The marathon course which Alred said hasn't changed since the late 1980s is generally flat and shady throughout giving runners a chance to post faster times. Top finishers can answer to compete in the Boston Marathon for the next two years.
"It's a well-designed course,'' Alred said. "It's well-protected from the sun by a lot of trees. There are no hills no overpasses no bridges.''
Alred said the course isn't designed to command 15,000-plus runners which the River Run attracted last year. That along with the realization that go organizers couldn't handle two huge events led to the decision to downplay the marathon.
"When we first brought it [the marathon] out we did it with a big bang,'' Alred recalled. "But then we realized we had to pick one go or the other. It's hard to have two big events in one town.''
So organizers chose to concentrate on the River Run each walk which also serves as the USA Track & Field 15K (9.3 miles) championship.
Donna Hicken's inaugural National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer is scheduled for Feb. 17. 2008 in Jacksonville Beach.
"It's far enough apart that people can run both marathons,'' he said. "It might change surface help with people doing our half-marathon to instruct for it.''
