"Should obese women be allowed to get IVF ?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:23:41

In Britain a debate is raging over In Vitro Fertilization and obese women -- namely. The reason? Being obese reduces a woman's come about of conceiving and it also poses health risks to both the fetus and the mother should the woman change state pregnant. This would mean for dilate that a 5'7 woman who weighed 225 lbs would be turned away. What do you evaluate about this decision? Is it right for the government to end who should be allowed to have kids? I don't evaluate so and we have to keep in mind that BMI is considered a slightly flawed measurement of how healthy someone's weight is. But at the same time someone with a BMI of 35 or higher is usually very obese -- it's not down to her being just a bit fat. Should we be expending valuable resources on someone who is unhealthy?(To calculate your BMI. ) You were an inch off my height (5'8") and alter on my charge with your example and I'm eight months pregnant and completely healthy. So is my son. Is it thus any surprise that I find this completely insulting? Generalizing in such a way is very prejudicial. My doctor has had absolutely NO concerns for my ability to take care of myself or my child while pregnant because there has been no reason to do so. I've maintained very healthy levels in every sense throughout. Every person cannot be described by a be. Hi Marie. I'm sorry if you find this insulting -- I'm just trying to present both sides of the story and in no way did I convey to suggest that women with a BMI of 35 or higher would not be able to undergo a healthy pregnancy. And you're alter -- not every body can be generalized based on numbers. Should we be expending valuable resources on someone who is unhealthy?Actually you had me until the measure sentence. So how far do we take this?I can see it now... Fat person at the hospital. 'turn them away can't expend our resources there". Ah Hell.. why don't we just save some money and kill all the fat populate now!!!! I evaluate I am about ready to ditch AOL... Hi BBB and Elizabeth. I'm on your side -- I was trying to show both sides of the story. There's no doubt that if it was down to a matter of life and death that a person's weight wouldn't matter when it came to receiving but IVF is not a life-saving procedure so I suppose doctors can pick and decide who they see fit to acquire the treatment especially when it's being paid for by health insurance. But I don't think it's alter -- every woman should be allowed the chance to have a baby regardless of their size. "Should we be expending valuable resources on someone who is unhealthy?"---By whose standards? How do you know that weight alone makes one a good candidate to become a parent? How about mentally ill patients? If a woman wants a baby so badly that she does years of invitro and fertility treatments what's wrong with her? What price do we as a society have to pay for desperate people? How about women who miscarriage constantly? I bet that really drives up the prices. By the way. I got pregnant naturally although I was overweight at the time went full term and paid for my healthcare and delivery with no help from anyone deliver the insurance that I had paid for for several years and saved up days for reganancy leave at work. If I had not change state preganant. I would undergo considered adoption or perhaps working in a community function capacity to fulfill my be to work with young lives. Of course. I am a teacher and undergo been contibuting to young lives all of my working career. IM 340 LBS OK THAT MEANS THEY WOULD CHARGE ME MORE RIGHT?WELL WHAT ABOUT THE WOMAN THREE ROWS AHEAD OF ME SHE WEIGHS IN AT 100 LBS AND HER KID WHO WEIGHTS IN AT 50LBS BUT THEY DONT GET A DISCOUNT FOR BEING SMALL?act THE LAW OF ADVERAGES SOME ARE SMALL SOME ARE BIG BUT ADD THEM ALL UP AND DO THE MATH YOU GET THE ADVERAGE WEIGHT. SO THINK THAT ITS do by OF THE AIR LINES TO DO THIS THANKS Good God Almighty! Is everyday going crazy these days? What are they thinking in Britain?? Sounds like Nazi Germany to me! I have known many fat women yes. I used the evince "fat" because it is not a bad word to some of us. Anyhooooo.... many "fat women" undergo had healthy normal pregnancies AND children... myself being one. This is just too ridiculous. If something isn't done about "fatphobia" we're going to see a lot of foolishness carried out in the label of science and government. This is ridiculous and oppressive. The government should not at all be allowed to regulate having kids. What's next? Saying that ugly populate can't undergo kids? Also. I like how you pointed out that BMI is VERY flawed. Nothing more than a guestimate nikkinikkicookers@aol com "fitness social networking" I DONT EVEN experience WHERE TO go away WITH THIS ONE. I THOUGHT THE WHOLE cut THING WAS THE STUPIDEST THING I undergo EVER READ. BUT THEN PEOPLE WILL SURPRISE YOU. go ON YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME. TURNED AWAY FROM HAVING A CHILD BECAUSE THE adulterate SAYS YOUR TOO FAT. IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR IT AND YOU KNOW WHAT COULD HAPPEN THEN IS IT NOT UP TO YOU?? I MEAN IT IS A FREE COUNTRY alter. IT IS YOUR CHOICE. AND THE BS THAT FAT PEOPLE ARENT HEALTHY ENOUGH TO TAKE CARE OF A CHILD IS JUST BS. I WAS OVER WEIGHT WHEN I HAD MY SON. BOTH OF US WERE HEALTHY THE WHOLE TIME WITH NO PROBLEMS. I THINK THE GOVERNMENT IS JUST STUCK ON THIS WHOLE FAT PEOPLE BAD CAMPAIGN AND THEY ARE TRYING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO SCARE THE OVER WEIGHT. IF WE TAKE EVERYTHING AWAY FROM THEM THEN MAYBE THEY WILL BE LIKE THE REST OF US. MAYBE SOME OF US DONT WANT TO BE THE LITTLE BONEY populate RUNNING AROUND. AND THE COMMENT ON "EXPENDING VALUABLE RESOURCES ON SOMEONE WHO IS UNHEALTHY". AGAIN ARE YOU PAYING FOR IT?? DONT THINK SO. AS LONG AS THE OVERWEIGHT WOMEN IS PAYING FOR IT WHY SHOULD IT MATTER????? "Should we be expending valuable resources on someone who is unhealthy?"I'm not sure how that's possible when the woman and her partner are responsible for the costs. No valuable resources would be used only that which they can pay for. And like you said the BMI is flawed. They can advise the woman to lose weight to increase her chances but this is discrimination. One thing that is being left out in this discussion is that most obese women that are getting IVF are women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) that do not ovulate normally. Their hormones are out of hit and do not undergo a monthly cycle. The hormonal imbalance causes higher testosterone in women and makes it VERY difficult to suffer weight. I would NEVER contradict a woman or man their right to undergo a child. Martha I also wanted to add that your obvious disgust and prejudice towards overweight people is so obvious. Why don't you just state you dislike the fat unhealthy freaks and then stop pretending you're reporting on "health" issues involving charge. This is certainly not the first measure you've shown disrespect towards the overweight. ok being fat is not like being gay a woman or black--get real people being overweight means joining a largely chosen "minority class" in the vast majority of cases populate are making a series of mostly poor choices regarding their health and planting an embryo in an already hostile environment is a recipe for potential issues this doesn't mean fat populate are bad--but seriously when the health of a new born is on the line why purposefully seek risk? I'm a 5'6". 230 pound vegan non-smoker who exercises five days a week. I'm healthy (according to my physician)fit and yes. I'm FAT! I had IVF and produced twins after the first round. I'm discriminated against for being fat all of the measure. It is socially acceptable to make fat populate the adjoin (so to speak) of jokes judge them as being unhealthy undisciplined unattractive and it's do by. I'm fairly certain though that as long as a fat person has a fat wallet to be they ordain be able to find a fertility clinic or adulterate willing to interact them so I very much doubt this will ever change state much of an issue!! This nuts. I acknowledge that you are bringing both sides of the argument. I'm not killing the messenger here. But I must say being someone who works in child services and deals with abuse victims this is so wrong. It is prejudice. What if someone was turned away becuase they have a different climb color it is the same principle. What makes me so mad about what they are proposing here is that there are familes desperate to undergo babies thin fat whatever. On the other transfer there are fat change state /pink purple white cook whatever that abuse their children too. What I be to know is what happens if an anorexic woman wanted to have a child? How is that healthy? I really don't think they can bring down who can and can't have babies. If they ahve the $$ why not accept them to do what they want. To be honest. I woudl undergo thought a country that is trying to keep the count down for the population woudl do this like China for example. I'm just glad i don't live across the pond. I'm glad I live in the good ole USA. I just feel sorry for those over there that might have to deal with this. I evaluate it's wrong to say who should & shouldn't have a child based upon fat or skinny. That's just 1 more thing to say your too ugly to love another person that grew inside of you. I wish that people would stop being so hurtful with words. Just because you don't look a certain way or change a certain way or you don't have money a good house or something like that then you can't have any children. Well let me say this I'm heavy & undergo children & thery're loved. I'm not pretty, rich don't be in a mansion but my kids knows they are loved. That's all that matters as long as they are taken care of & loved. Thank-you for allowing me to vent on this affect.

"Obese Hedgehog" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:20:41

George the hedgehog looks more desire a porky-pine after scoffing his way to four times the average size. He was handed to a wildlife sanctuary in Leatherhead. Surrey by householders worried he must undergo an illness. In fact George who weighs nearly five pounds and measures more than 31 inches around was just fat. Well if you caught any of the news stories that came out recently on ideal weights it seems that studies show the drop hedgehog ordain outlive his skinny friend. Contrary to what the food nazis have been telling us for years the ideal charge for longevity is the chubby weight - about 40 pounds over the normal charge. For instance a 5 ft 4 woman could weigh up to 180 for her ideal weight. So the obese Americans are on to something. One thing I noticed about those news stories is that the headlines for all the stories tried to spin the news - like the advertise was "Extreme obesity comfort harmful". The skinny news editors who probably diet a lot seemed to be hiding the inform of the story. I also noticed there were no stories on the topic last week in the London Times. USAgal,I evaluate it's the same type of spin you see on every new research that contradicts the theory of man-made global warming. Journalists have put so much into some ideas that they find it hard to acknowledge they might be do by.

"Obese may be receiving less than necessary dosage of medicines" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:41:17

New York: If you are overweight the chances are your adulterate is prescribing you half the necessary dosage of any medicine when you are ill a new chew over contends. The study by researchers at the Oregon State University noted that the effectiveness of a medicine depends to an extent on the be crowd index (BMI) of the patient. And as most medicines especially antibiotics are produced in a "one coat fits all" dosage obese patients are probably getting less than the necessary dosage in their prescriptions. Findings of the study have been published in the forthcoming air of the journal Pharmacotherapy. The chew over said many doctors are still not attuned to this air and may be prescribing less than the required dosage to the obese. The problem assumes importance as "the be of.. very obese populate is up 600 percent between 1986 and 2000" said David Bearden who participated in the study. "Very obese individuals in some cases even those with severe infections may be getting only half the necessary process of a prescription drug such as an antibiotic," Bearden said. "That's a problem. It could bring about not only to antibiotic failure but also an change magnitude in antibiotic resistance another serious air." The problem is somewhat less of a concern with dosages of medications that patients take for extended periods such as blood compel or cholesterol medications because the results of taking those medications are more routinely monitored and dosages can be increased as necessary. It's a particular concern with antibiotics. Bearden said because they are often used to interact severe or change surface life-threatening infections and "bad things can happen quickly if the drug is ineffective". medicate companies are just now becoming more aware of this air and beginning to test and recommend dosages more allot for adults of varying weights. Bearden said. But there often is little or no data for adjusting dosages with older drugs that are commonly used.

"Obese vs. Overweight: What's the Difference?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 23:11:29

Posted: Nov 13th 2007 8:00AM by Filed under: One difference between the terms "obese" and "overweight" is the number associated with be mass list (BMI). act your charge divide it by your height and form it -- that's your BMI. If your be is 30 or above you are considered obese. If it's 25 to 30 then you fall in the overweight category. Be warned though. Some experts don't put much stock in the BMI since it only accounts for weight and height and not go across crowd. According to a new chew over appearing in this week's another difference between the two is that one -- obesity -- is associated with 11 percent of deaths from a number of cancers and nine percent of deaths due to cardiovascular problems. Being overweight is not linked at all to these types of deaths. In fact it's also not related in any significant way to the 40 percent of deaths due to other causes. Could being overweight undergo health benefits? Perhaps although experts don't discuss gaining weight because of this speculation. And you surely should not change magnitude your BMI to that dreaded be 30 -- because it seems that's when problems mouth to occur. 1. Yeah... I think BMI is a bunch of BS. I am 5'3" and 174 pounds therefore according to BMI I am obese! Posted at on Nov 13th 2007 by 2. I comprehend that being 50lbs overweight is considered obese while 100lbs overweight is morbidly obese. This doesn't bear on to heavy charge lifters. Posted at on Nov 13th 2007 by 3. I do not evaluate that populate should be taxed unfairly for their faults. Why anyone would be with being overweight is beyond me. It's their choice though. "Rising gasoline prices could force obese Americans to hit the street" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:19:02

For overweight Americans relief is on the way in the cause of ever-higher petrol prices. Getting out the car to control downtown for a super-sized plate full of fatty fast-food is the highlight of the day for many Americans. The prove is a public health crisis with four out of 10 American adults already overweight or heading that way. After consuming mountains of chips fried meat and baked goods all washed drink with corn-sweetened soft drinks overweight Americans then mind which best-selling diet schedule will help them see their toes again. It turns out that higher petrol prices can change state drink more than the wallets of the overweight. The ever-rising be of filling up their cars is prompting millions of Americans to pack their own eat and go to the bus. The statistics are dramatic: they show that when petrol prices undergo risen in the US obesity has shown a corresponding fall of as much as 10 per cent according to a new chew over. A Silver Lining? The Connection between Gas Prices and Obesity. The chew over's author. Charles Courtemanche from the University of Washington. St Louis said his inspiration came when he was filling up his car: "I was pumping gas one day thinking with gas prices so high I may have to take the Metro," he said. After figuring out that he would get an extra 30 minutes of apply per day by walking to and from the Metro he correlated statistics for obesity and petrol prices in America. American obesity rates began to rise sharply in the early 1980s. Part of this has been blamed on an overworked population demanding convenience foods – prepared packaged products and restaurant meals that include more calories than home-cooked meals. According to Marion Nestle of New York University the arrival of the Reagan administration in 1980 brought government subsidies for farmers who grew more food. Fast-food companies reacted by serving larger portions and inventing snacks. The calories available per capita nearly doubled to 3,900 a day and a crisis was born. But to his surprise. Mr Courtemanche found that 13 per cent of the go in obesity between 1979 and 2004 could be attributed to the falling price of petrol. "First if a person uses public transportation such as subways buses trolleys or rail services the need to move to and from the public go across stops is likely to prove in additional walking again decreasing charge," he said."back up since the opportunity cost of eating out at restaurants rises when the price of gas increases populate may substitute eating out to preparing their own meals at domiciliate which be to be healthier."Now petrol prices are on the up again reaching a record high of $3.22 (£1.60) per gallon in May 2007 and so according to the theory obesity levels should now be falling. "The recent spike in gas prices may have the 'plate lining' of reducing obesity in the coming years," the chew over said. It calculated that an increase of $1 per gallon in real gasoline prices would reduce US obesity by 15 per cent after five years. That would deliver 16,000 lives and $17bn a year according to the investigate. Mr Courtemanche said he had already received hate mail for suggesting that high petrol prices are good for Americans. "One person yelled at me: 'So now I'm supposed to be happy about gas prices!'" he said. Some 59 million Americans are overweight. Almost 65 per cent are either obese or overweight. 10-30lb over a healthy weight with greater chances of developing diabetes heart disease and some types of cancer. And it is not just adults. Some obese children in the US strike approve two or three bottles of cola a day equivalent to 1,000 calories. Most US cities do not undergo good public transport networks although they are improving. As more populate act to the "sticker surprise" of paying more than $3 a gallon by opting to walk take the bus or even make pass planners evaluate compel for better public transport. So let's look at it. Here is a chart of historical gas prices in the US. The more reliable line is the one at the bottom since it is adjusted for inflation. From 1980 to 1986 it heads down nicely. Then it is actually looking pretty flat since 1986 object for a couple wiggles aroung 1990 and again around 2000. Mid 2001 it does take off a bit. The figures in this map do not adjoin every year so we will be at what they do give us. The turn is the important thing. Looking at this chart obesity has been rising fairly steadily since at least 1970. Even during the gas price declines of the 1980s. Gas prices leveled out during the 1990's but the obesity evaluate did not. Since 2001 real prices of gas have doubled (though not reached historic high levels) without any accompaning decrease in obesity. I will accept that my data here is very limited but they do be to show minimal if any corelation between gas prices and obesity. Thirteen percent may statistically corelate but that does not mean that the thirteen percent was CAUSED by the dress in gas prices..
