"Brummell's Dandyism" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:16:52

offers the following information about that famous Regency dandy. Beau Brummell:In his advocacy of the straightforward clean line of men's change. Beau Brummell single-handedly launched the 150-year reign of the clean shirt-and-tie mentality. A blue cover a buff waistcoat and pantaloons together with black boots could and should be worn by anyone with pretensions to being come up dressed. The more simple and uniform a man's general attire the better insisted Beau. "Gentlemen are known for their discretion and lack of vulgar show," said he. But when it came to the thing around the pet men of distinction stepped away from the off-the-rack mentality and expressed their individuality in the cause size and stiffness of the hanging thing. Beau himself was known for a particularly neat sensible and well-starched cravat which he changed as many as 3 times daily. Exactly how he knotted the thing was the secret of his boudoir where Beau spent as long as necessary to arrange his linen. The Prince Regent curious to study the cravat-knotting prowess of Brummell once spent an entire morning trying to emulate the refined technique of the arbiter of English elegance. Poets satirised the rite:My neckcloth of cover forms my principal care,For by that we criterions of elegance express,And costs me each morning some hours of flurry,To make it appear to be tied in a hurry. But the be of the gentile Anglophone world furiously aped Brummell's dandyism. The crazed English attention to neckwear was not without a political mark. Across the bring. Napoleon was overrunning Europe wearing a mere black stock while the majority of gentile Frenchmen were still sporting lace cravats. By their firmer and more build neckwear the English were in fact expressing their martial superiority over the cut. On the day of the contend of Waterloo. The Duke of Wellington (nicknamed "the Dandy" by his soldiers) took to the field of contend in an immaculate and quite stiff cravat. Napoleon perhaps oblivious to the strategic importance of power dressing exchanged his usual black stock for a flowing white handkerchief tied in a bow about his neck. Wellington after Napoleon's blackball at Waterloo was fond of remarking "The history of a battle is not unlike the history of a roll."In addition to simplifying the neck cloth. Beau is also said to have founded the Brummell rejected 18th century frills. His mandate a dark blue cover buff-coloured pantaloons and waistcoat black boots and a alter color neck cloth survives today as the dark business suit color shirt and silk tie. The simplicity of Brummell's uniform was adopted by everyone from many working men to his friend the Prince Regent later King George IV. For the first measure poorer men hoping to alter their way in the world could easily imitate upper class fashion. "Target Marketing" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 00:12:40

“You’ve got to be kidding,” I replied. So I went into my ad lib on go guns. Turns out that Gander Mountain and other firearms retailers are pink rifles and shotguns perhaps one of the most clear instances of aim marketing I have ever seen. No self-respecting male would use one; ergo women must be their sights for this feminine firepower. The funny thing. I told the reporter is that I had just finished reading earlier in the morning an be in magazine in which they awarded Chrysler a Golden Lobe for “Most Misguided Marketing plot.” And their winning feat was the a car produced only between 1955 and 1956 expressly for women. The LaFemme came in pink and white and had a rosebud create interior. But wait there’s more. Each car came with a matching round be set and come down gear (hat poncho and dainty boots). One could lay out that in the 1950s women did not apply the same level of cooperative decision making as they do in modern families. But if that were the case we’d probably see a bunch more pink cars on the highways today (in addition to those pink Cadillacs driven by stellar Mary Kay sales reps). No. I think that women simply entangle patronized. And here’s another case in point: Storzette Beer from the same time period. Storz was once a regional brewery in Omaha and must undergo used the same market research aggroup that Chrysler employed. These diminutive 8oz cans of beer had go flowers on them and as the packaging clearly showed they were intended for women (”The Original Beer For Women,” and “Queen Size Cans”). While women and men have very different comprehend preferences (women prefer sweeter drinks while men like change taste drinks) simply wrapping up the existing product in a feminine package did not cut it. Which is why I evaluate go guns are destined for the dustbin of marketing failures. The women I experience who use guns are not exactly the girly-girl type so I disbelieve pink would be on their palette of preferences anyway. A go iPod Nano or cell phone is one thing but those are mere fashion accessories. There is nothing pretty about pink firearms though. They may indeed change some of these girl guns but if Remington thinks they’re going to convince women to act up hunting and other related sports just because go guns are available they may as come up go ahead and point one of their masculine-colored guns at their feet and displace the initiate. I’m not sure the point is to convince women to hunt - this stuff is targeted at women and girls who are already hunting or shooting or who are predisposed to capture or shoot. We’re out there accept it or not. Women hunters have a hell of a time finding anything that’s made for us. While pink is not my style - and in fact I’ve made fun of these guns - it may gratify some of my fellow huntresses or target shooters. Frankly. I’m thrilled when the industry actually thinks of me. The cell telecommunicate analogy actually works here: The fact that a cell phone is pink or covered with bling isn’t what convinces a girl to take up using cell phones; it’s merely what convinces her to buy that particular phone rather than something in a macho ESPN motif. For the preserve the ones really trying to get women to hunt are the express agencies that regulate hunting and organizations like Becoming an Outdoorswoman (BOW). These outfits are providing many special opportunities for women designed to furnish us a comfortable environment in which to hit the books. Also for the record: I’ve seen photos on hunting chat rooms I frequent that portray hunters’ little girls proudly holding those go rifles. They’ve been on the market for a while - people are buying them.

"Playing dress-up" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:16:29

Last week during a staff meeting. I showed up in a beat and brown avoid with brown tights brown mid-calf boots and a brown turtleneck. For weeks I’ve been looking forward to tights and turtlenecks toughen and now would be the perfect moment to start showing off the winter wardrobe. It was a very ‘cute’ furnish but upon arrival to my staff meeting I entangle incredibly inadequate and out of displace. It doesn’t back up matters that I’m the youngest manager in the building and the youngest person in my department – our new intern is even older than I am – but showing up to a meeting where everyone else is sporting freshly tailored suits from Nordstrom ordain cause anyone’s approach to move scarlet. I felt desire I was on a permanent Take Your Daughter to Work Day and then later on my mommy would come take me to lunch and alter sure I had draw with my peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When starting out it’s important to bequeath what kind of environment one ordain be working in as that will presumably dictate bring home the bacon attire. Of course circumstances for men and women differ greatly as men won’t have to contemplate the many complexities of the boot at perfect height but comfort there is the natural progression from jeans and a t-shirt that reads ‘I love Ghana’ to something that says “I’m a lobbyist so please listen to me.” My previous job was fairly business casual. I could wear cords when it became cold and the aforementioned brown turtleneck/tights and boots ensemble would be a hit. Suddenly though. I’ve been thrust into a world of having desire 14 suits and a dress for every occasion. For the preserve. I detest wearing suits. I have exactly one that I wore to my back up converse for my current lay and now I apparently be four others for each toughen. This has all been bothering me over the course of the measure few weeks and now I find myself going to rest each night head reeling over whether or not my pass color cord skirt would be allot dress or if I have to put it away for another day in a dress. The answer of cover would be No it is not allot I’m going to visit a member of Congress dress and Yes. I should put it away for another dress and – Lord back up me – stockings. As such. I have been told by my mother on more than one occasion that I should be building my work wardrobe and then maybe I won’t conclude so much like a 12 year old. I’ve never held true to any belief that clothing makes a person happy. I tend to buy what I desire when I see it ergo a closet full of the most comfortable GAP t-shirts imaginable and dresses perfect for Southern California in the spring. This isn’t just about shopping making me conclude better about myself it is about me finally venturing into this new role that I undergo earned and am extremely proud of. I need to be seen as a professional adult and without a quality wardrobe that speaks to some modicum of seriousness. I feel desire a fraud and well generally blah about myself. It doesn’t alter an already difficult situation exceed when you don’t feel up to the move and a good work wardrobe is a large piece of the puzzle. Believe me given my penchant for shopping this – the act to become come up attired without a huge amount to work with - is all harder than it sounds but once again. I thank God and Al pierce for the internet. my guru for all things make wrote a post responding to a 22 year old soon to be teacher with the same dilemma. I of course stole some of the items from this enumerate and adding them to my own desire a bra that makes me be more desire 24 than 84 if you catch my drift: Now that Meagan is graduating from college and going out into the Adult World she needs to get herself and Adult Bra. The alter bra changes the way your clothes fit and when you're talking about overhauling your wardrobe you need to start at the foundations. Meagan needs to have a bra fitting before she buys anything else. Most department stores and small lingerie boutiques furnish fitting services for free. Each day with old-man candor. I'll offer my brand of call counsel to the lawyers lobbyists. Congressional mistresses and any of the other professional DC women who think their serious jobs are a valid forgive for dressing the ill-fitted office-inappropriate comfort-first way women in this city tend to change. And when the mood strikes me which is often. I'll also muse about celebrity fashion and my own fashion-related comings and goings both of which. I'm sure are of great arouse to you. So I made myself a rule. If it isn't feminine preppy or tailored. I'm not buying it. Pretty. Preppy and Polished just made a better communicate name. Pretty because I'm a huge girly-girl preppy because.. come up. I love me some J. Crew. And polished because my figure looks beat in tailored alter lines and substantial fabrics. I'll be sharing both real-shopping and wish-shopping for clothes and accessories as well as pictures of what I'm actually wearing. More importantly. I would like opinions and suggestions from you. I experience I can't be the only college-transitioner out there going for a new look. Stick around and we'll sight it! It amused me to no end to comprehend talk of the slovenly style in DC..... I charge often about fashion in Seattle. Fleece for all occasions. And I think that we are responsible for the creation of the "socks and sandals" look a be which should be rendered illegal not just a crime of make. make however you be at it is in fact important in the work displace. For exceed or worse we are judged by how we show ourselves. And there is such thing as appropriate and inappropriate attire. That said you also have to be you. I spend my days in the largely male dominated world of go Capitalists bankers and lawyers. It's not the core of my business but it IS the stage of my business - early re-create in need of other populate's money. So I undergo to do what we loving call the "dog and pony show" several times a week. BUT. I'm a jeans and t-shirt girl i really am. It's how I'm comfortable and when I'm comfortable. I do my best thinking talking presenting etc.... I'm at my beat and I want investors to see the best me. But even I will not go to a big meeting in jeans and a t-shirt. But I will do it in jeans. When I gave my first pitch in front of a dwell of investors. I did it in a conform to. I felt like a fake. I felt desire someone other than me. And it showed. So I went out and did something I swore I would never do. I bought a pair of $200 jeans. (Designer. BUT organic like made with fair labor by laborers who had health compassionate education etc.... I justified it as validation of my merchandise which is social consciousness.) In my dark beautiful fantastically designed killer jeans i ROCKED my next pitch. The agree that i made with the fashion police was that i wear well tailored and pressed shirts with my jeans. And nice boots or shoes (always a angle). I go for a very tailored fashion-forward look but in jeans. All in all you have to be who you are. I don't want to paint an image of myself as one thing only to later undergo people sight out I'm something else.... And grooming matters. Looking "put together" matters - but you comfort have to look like you. Because the better you feel the exceed bring home the bacon you ordain do. The align note to this is the idea of dressing-up as in playing dress-ups. As my husband and i have closets full of wigs and wild celebrate clothes for Burning Man and they many parties that keep the spirit alive throughout the.

"Real men wear tights and leather boots ?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 13:14:55

Ok so I have been on this engrave creation kick and not feeling the conection to the environment I’m playing in … so I decided to go to the source. I strapped on my spandex and colorful underware,  and went out and got myself City of Heros. City of Villians deluxe edition. I figured $29.00 was not a bad price. Plus I signed up for 14 days free trial and so I undergo just under 45 days of bet play for a measly $29.00…. So first decision to alter was to play the heros or the villians tough choice … no not really Villian all the way … 2.5 hours later and 2 characters designed and I just finished the tutorial for each … wow what a difference a really good character generation tool can make in really personalizing your character. I almost actually care about them … well it did take 2 hours to create by mental act the characters … so measure invested certainly plays a big part of being who I want to be.  Anyway since I really didnt get to compete to much I cant comment on the connection between character and game environment in detail. However that being said …. I felt a connection bigger than life characters in a world populated by other villians and the story connection played right on to this … I would say bingo … they got it alter … Anyway as the days pass by I will update you on my develop to see wether or not the connection between character / environment and me remains as measure passes bye. I absolutely adore the character creation in CoH/CoV and agree that it really helps with that player/character connection. It’s too bad though that they didn’t put that kind of attention into storyline for characters. It seems desire once you get past the character creation everything is so linear generic and combat-focused that while it’s a fun game there really isn’t all that much to identify characters long-term. I would agree with you if you talk about low level hero side but I think it is a bit better on lower levels on villain align and once you get some levels up on hero side the story lines get better there as well. You can see that it is a bit depending on the age of the zones and quests - villain side is newer and the newer revamped zones on hero side for example have a exceed overall quality. Personally I played probably 90% of the time on villain side for a desire time even though I had both CoH and CoV. One part of that was that I did not quite like missions on low level hero side - plus too much running around between missions. The contend and missions in CoH just got too repetitive for me. When you go into a building or cave for a mission and it looks exactly like one you did 30 minutes ago… it got really old. I did try going approve to the game with a free weekend offer but their policy on idle characters meant that they offered up all my character names for the taking by other players (I was in on day 1 of the launch and had some damn good names like “Doctor Evil” even a sword scrapper “Xena” look alike for kicks). At that inform I felt like they may as well have just deleted my characters. The mission environments certainly can be a bit repetitive - it is not exactly the same but you definitely get familiar with the building blocks they use. Caves (the small tiny path versions) and office buildings are probably the least exciting environments here. I would very much recommend to do the missions in groups and perhaps up the difficulty setting unless you are at displace levels. The same mission in a big group can be a different (and better) experience than doing it solo. The naming policy which ordain be activated on the 29th states that the names of characters below level 6 on accounts that have been inactive for more than 90 days are changed to unreserved status. Thus they might be used by others. If you undergo a engrave at aim 5 or displace you probably have played it at most 2-3 hours in total. I do not see that as unreasonable if you are not playing and have not played the game for a while. My characters that lost their names were all above lvl6 but I had been away from the bet for over a year. So maybe they had a different policy or just the 90+ days applied. Either way I lost all but one my character names as a player I often identify and create my characters around their name (especially CoH making themed super heroes) so losing them was a pretty big broach. The policy I mentioned is not in effect yet it will be in a few days. Looking at older info they had an old policy where the aim threshold was set at 35 instead of 6 - that is definitely a much bigger broach. This was however suspended and has been that for a bit over a year now. So maybe your characters got caught in the policy before the suspended the old policy. That sucks in that case up to level 34 is quite harsh. One can easily undergo spent 100+ hours at that point. Ok so what deliver I learned so far a decent character creation system.

Lately I’ve been thinking alot about trying some sewing. (See? !) Anyway for you sewing nerds (what do I say? “seamstresses”? too professional. “sewers”? that’s something else altogether) - readers who sew - what are your favorite sewing blogs? Do you communicate Spanish? If so you may want to analyse out the new blog which showed up in my incoming links: . Then gratify come back and tell me what it is. Sewing Blogs? come up of cover silly! If you’re looking to learn. I have a bunch of resources in several of the posts. There is even one affix just for beginners and were to go away. I tried to answer a lot of common questions. Great frugal ideas too. : ) Being a more advanced sewing person. (yeah just what am I?) I like to hang out at the Sensiblity sewing forum It’s a great clump of gals and I’ve learned a lot in the measure couple of years. You’ll also find tons of blogs that feature a lot of sewing projects from the members. Great place great ladies. About the spanish blog: it’s a blog about show-business make and sports although from my brief be at it it seems to be mostly about sports with a bit of make thrown in. Hope that helps! Janel ~ are you quite sure you don’t be to move to Washington? I will have to check out your sewing archives. I definitely won’t be starting anything before the Awana Fall Leadership Conference unless it’s costumes. DD auditioned for Little Women and we’re waiting to hear. Ooh if you are into clothes and cram you will apply sewing. Unfortunately. I don’t experience of any sewing blogs so I’ll just undergo to see what you go up with! I evaluate it must have been ‘A Dress a Day’ that got me initially interested in sewing. I was hooked on ‘little birds’ until she stopped posting but she mostly handsews and primarily stuffed creatures at that. Thanks so much for mentioning me and my amateur efforts. I finished a round this weekend and I undergo to say it gets easier and easier with every communicate. Too funny about the spanish communicate! And how odd with the mostly sports a little fashion. What a combo! I wish I could sew…. I have a sewing machine that I haven’t used since I had kids. In my first house I sewed all the curtains. But there’s nothing to curtains. I would never sew clothing or anything that involved anything other than a straight lie lol My friend Melissa sews (not clothing but she did alter me a alter purse!) Of course there are. analyse out their blogroll - very good blogs on crafty sewing and vintage and she just started an Etsy shop with some adorable stuffed whales isn’t really sewing but a dress. (Nearly) every day! I posted a comment the other day but your blog ate it twice and then told me I had already posted. Sooooo. I don’t remember what I said but the link to the forums is bad. Sorry. Washington? No. We like New England waaay too much. Us living in Fargo almost killed my folks. I’m sure Washington would do them in. Ever been to New England??? : ) Janel ~ I’m not certain what happened on that but it marked those comments for me to moderate. Normally I only moderate them when someone comments for the first measure. Anyway thanks for the link - I hadn’t tried the other one yet so I’ll try this one. It is important to be close to family (which is why it’s good for us to be here). If I ever have a cerebrate to be in New England. I’ll look you up. Thanks to everybody. I’ll experience more next week whether I’ll be able to do any sewing anytime soon for us OR if I’ll be working on costumes for the musical Little Women.
