"Tammy Sytch interview recap" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-16 03:55:48

Tammy Sytch - formerly known as Sunny in the WWF - appeared as a guest on contend Network Radio on December 14th to discuss her appearance at Raw’s fifteenth anniversary special the possibility of a return to WWE her measure in ECW getting back into shape for television and more. Fight communicate Radio can be heard every Monday through Friday at 3pm EST on Hardcore Sports Radio (Sirius Channel 186) and online at www hardcoresportsradio com and www. TheFightNetwork com. The following is a transcript of that interview. John Pollock (Producer/Co-host. Fight Network Radio): You know it’s getting very cold up here in Canada as we come the heart of pass so I’m doing my part in making things a bit more “sunny” here on Fight Network Radio as we welcome a real trailblazer when it comes to women in professional wrestling. She is Tammy Sytch better known as “Sunny” from her days in the World Wrestling Federation. Tammy how is that for an intro? Sytch: Actually. I got the phone call almost two weeks before the show. The person from the office that I’m very good friends with and have been friends with him for years - Howard Finkel - he gave me a call and he says. “comprehend we’ve got this idea we’d really like to have you be a part of the show but it’s only ninety-nine percent definite right now.” He said the writers comfort had to work everything out and evaluate out who was going to do what on the show. So he asked me he said. “Please do not tell anybody. Don’t talk about the show don’t mention to anybody that we’ve called you because we want it to be a big surprise.” So. I said. “Okay great. Awesome.” So of course it was eating at me desire crazy. I wanted to tell every hit person I knew. But I’m waiting and waiting and finally a bring together days later I get the confirmation call that I was going to be on and I couldn’t have been more excited. Sytch: I told my boyfriend. I told a bring together of change state friends that I knew wouldn’t leak it anywhere. And then all of a sudden I’m getting a bunch of E-mails the Wednesday night before the show saying. “You’re gonna be on Raw!” And I was desire. “Wait a minute; how does everybody know? I didn’t tell anybody.” It worked out that WWE com actually put it on the website and Howard didn’t even know they were gonna do that. He was told they were going to keep it a surprise. But whatever - it leaked it got out there. Sytch: Well you know what? I actually undergo to give all the credit to my boyfriend. He’s the one who got my butt approve in the gym got my ass in gear got me back on my old diet. And pretty much got me approve into cause back into “Sunny cause”. And it’s great because Monday night I’m walking around the show and seeing all my old friends and co-workers and they were desire. “You look like Sunny from 1997. You haven’t changed a bit.” Little do they know it took a lot of bring home the bacon like Sunny again (Laughs). But a lot of populate who hadn’t seen me in a while thought I just didn’t change. So I guess I did a good job. I guess my boyfriend did a good job of training me. Pollock: No the hard work definitely paid off. We actually did a poll on our website asking. “Of all the people that appeared on Raw Monday night who was most likely to get a contract offer out of it?” Sixty-four percent - you blew away the entire competition. Steve Blackman was … Sytch: Oh absolutely. I’ve never been completely out; I’ve always been in the business in one way or another for the past eighteen years - and yeah accept it or not it’s been eighteen years. (Laughs) But I just turned thirty-five on Friday on December 7th - actually a week ago - and I’m comfort good for one more good run on T. V and that’s what I’m hoping to get out of this whole thing. So you never know we’ll see what happens. But having that little taste of the limelight and a little taste of the crowd going crazy really brought approve to my mind where I belong and what I should be doing and that’s working for the WWE and being on T. V again. Pollock: Now you mentioned that you’re thirty-five years old now and - for fans doing the math in their heads - going on to the national stage with the World Wrestling Federation back in 1995 in your early twenties. How much pressure was that on you at such a young age - and really the company put you on such a huge run at that point to alter you one of the faces of the company. Sytch: alter. When I got the job I was twenty-one years old. In my object when I be back on it … I mean. I loved every second of it. But I actually was too young and too immature to handle all the fame that came my way. I was twenty-one twenty-two twenty-three at my height but I still had the brain of a sixteen-year old. (Laughs) So. I think if I was older at the measure I could have handled everything a lot exceed. I did undergo quite an attitude at times. I did get a little “diva-ish” at times. But that was the be of fame that came to me at such a quick walk. It was a lot to handle. Like I said. I’m a lot more mature now and I would experience how to handle it and be a little bit smarter with my business decisions. But you be and you learn and everything happens for a reason. So maybe I had that attitude so I could learn now not to have it. So who knows? Pollock: Do you think. Tammy that there are different standards in this industry where we see someone like you who says being immature and somewhat “diva-ish” during your younger years. And then we see males on the other align where it’s “Well they’re being a politician.” It’s not the same stigma. I evaluate when it comes to males versus females in the industry. Do you see a divide there when management is looking down at people and their behavior? Sytch: Oh it’s absolutely different. Men and women are all looked upon in different ways. Girls in the business are never going to be looked at desire the guys are. You know a guy can undergo an attitude and he’s being political or a good businessman. A girl can have an attitude and I wasn’t a good businessperson. I was a bitch. (Laughs) It really is a lot different. Anywhere you go in the world there’s standards on how men and women are treated differently. But you experience what? That’s life and you gotta broach with it and try to make the best of it. Pollock: As you be at the current crop of divas right now - not just in the WWE but TNA as come up - do you see a lot of the fingerprints of what they molded out of your engrave back in ‘95. ‘96? Because really for a national audience you were really the blueprint for the evolution from desire Elizabeth character to the females being portrayed in a very sexual way and what we get today on television. Sytch: Right. come up what I like to be proud of is that I like to consider myself the first “be package” as far as females go in the wrestling business. There was Miss Elizabeth who was actually gorgeous and she stood at ringside very well but that’s all she did. And then you had Sensational Sherri who was a great performer and great in the ring but she wasn’t that great to look at. But then I came along finally - and like I said. I like to consider myself the “be case” - I could do a great photo shoot my pictures were amazing. I could get on the mic and communicate for ten minutes off the top of my head if I had to. I could get in the ring if I had to. I was one of the best managers they’ve ever seen. So once I came along.

"Where Is Our Culture?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 12:32:21

Yesterday. I had an experience that I haven’t been able to forbid thinking about since. I was outside for a few minutes and a kid probably about eleven or twelve pedaled by on his bicycle. He kept looking over his shoulder at me and then quickly rode away. Just as I was going approve inside the kid came back around the block. As I was closing the door behind me. I heard a young voice say excitedly “I saw the homo! I saw the homo!”. Yeah fun times. Not that I actually care what a twelve-year-old and his friend think of me but it is interesting nonetheless. I’ve apparently become something of a neighborhood attraction. I suppose this really shouldn’t affect me. I go outside in all manner of gendered presentation full makeup no makeup boobs no boobs. Of cover. I don’t actually go anywhere unless I’m properly put together but I’m not going to reach just to walk to the mailbox or get something from my car. This particular time I was in full makeup hair done but I’d changed out of what I was wearing…all of it including most of my bust…and was wearing egest pants and a Josie and the Pussycats t-shirt. Oh and of cover my nails are done. In other words. I was looking about as totally genderqueer as I get. It’s a be I’m perfectly comfortable in at home or around certain change state friends and family but it’s not really something I do intentionally by actually going for that be (anymore). What’s most interesting to me about this is not that these kids think I’m a sideshow attraction but that they think it’s because I’m homosexual. I resist the temptation to denominate this kid a bigot because I doubt he’s old enough to undergo any real understanding of what a “homo” actually is. Hell he might turn out to be one himself in just a few short years. And yet change surface though the ignorance of a child is surely not a reliable guide in such things. I sight myself wondering if that’s part of the problem that for the most part despite all the political develop we’ve made recently we’re comfort essentially socially and culturally invisible as transpeople in mainstream society. I’m not talking politics here not really. What I’m starting to wonder is if transpeople are perceived as joined at the hip with gays and lesbians because we want to be. That begs the question of cover. DO we want to be? Of course it makes sense politically but where is the culture that belongs to transpeople alone? Can we change surface say we really have one? There are many aspects of gay and lesbian culture especially those involving sex and act where transpeople often sight themselves welcome to be show but not participate or are simply excluded from. Where are the corresponding trans-exclusive spaces? They are out there but you’ll have to search them out and of course that’s assuming you have a trans community in your area which cares enough to create one. A few years ago. I co-founded a weekly trans assort rap at my local Pride Center. We got a few people the first few meetings and then…nothing. No one. After a few more we gave up. As far as I know the one and only trans group that still meets at the Center is the Gender Rights Advocacy Association of New Jersey (GRAANJ) the political advocacy group. There’s more to life than politics despite how it probably feels to a lot of us sometimes. It’s wonderful that we overlap so many cultural spaces with gay and lesbian people. In many ways it’s an excellent model of how other differences such as go and ethnicity can be all but ignored within the greater context of a community even as many in that community will tend to divide up along gender lines socially. The problem comes in when you try to fit unconventionally-gendered people into gender-specific spaces. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t and sometimes it works for some but not for others. Those of us who act media can help in that but our impact goes only so far. We can give people a place to come together and to speak to each other through the media we create but there’s always a buffer there the media we use in which to get our message out. Some media like talk radio is personal community-oriented and very interactive. Other media desire the Internet or print media is less or non-interactive but comfort helps tour community connect to each other. We can speak to and speak with our community on the grand worldwide scale far more efficiently than we’re able to face-to-face person-to-person. Gays and lesbians generally don’t have this problem or at least not to the extent we transfolks do. evaluate fast: How many local gay bars or clubs can you name? Now how many lesbian bars? And how many tranny bars?I used to know of two tranny bars in Manhattan but one got change state down during the Giuliani Administration. The other. Edelweiss. I accept is comfort around…and that’s it as far I know for the entire City of New York. Nothing in Jersey object for a club I knew of in Atlantic City twenty-five years ago nothing in Philly. change surface the Pride Centers of these cities don’t furnish a whole lot for us. Where is transgender grow? For transpeople it seems that domiciliate is where the Internet is. The largest physical gatherings of transpeople almost always involve an event to which transpeople often must travel a desire distance in request to attend such as a organizational convention and many of these events are wrapped up in political advocacy. Aside from those kinds of events the vast majority of our intra-community socialization takes place online. It’s not surprising therefore that most of our community-relevant media is Internet-based as well. Attempts have been made to bridge the cultural gap between the transgender community and the mainstream but none have proven truly successful yet. We have no LOGO nothing on Bravo nothing that really serves that kind of gate-opening role for transpeople that Ellen Degeneres and “Will and Grace” did for gays and lesbians. As someone who has made her own attempts at trying to span that change integrity even after all this time I comfort wonder how long it ordain be before the mainstream media begins to get us as come up and starts to incorporate us and our perspectives into the mainstream. When you’re comfort fighting for representation in even the mainstream media which is directly intended and marketed to your own community hoping for real mainstream inclusion may be just a call dream. for now. Where is transgender culture?Chances are you’re not going to sight it by turning on your television or change surface your radio. If you’re not actually travelling somewhere where it happens to surface periodically on a regular basis you’re probably going to find it online and in create. You can construe a hundred writers and get a hundred different takes on what it means to be a transgender person. You can listen to and participate in shows desire mine or Ethan’s for social and political talk and debate. You can listen to any of the many great podcasts being created by transpeople. There’s relevant trans community media out there for those who want it and seek it out but precious little for those who can’t or won’t dig deep enough to find it. It’s not unreasonable to believe that the reason why everyone seems to think we’re all just another variety of “homo” is because that’s what most of our popular media tells populate we are intentionally or not. We can create our own versions of virtual transgender community centers and rap groups but it won’t.
