"Family Thanksgivings" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-07 23:39:50

I like Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving dinners. After living in Oklahoma for so many years we had a California Thanksgiving. Living in a Retirement Community. I asked several of our neighbors what they were going to do for Thanksgiving. One was going to a nephews already arranged. Another didn't know because the son that invited them for dinner lived in another community and the son would have to drive clear to Leisure World and then back to his accommodate. The other son lived here in Leisure World but he was going in another direction. He said. "I don't know what will happen." As we were leaving to have Thanksgiving at my son's mother-in-law's house there were cars up and drink the street picking up their relatives for Thanksgiving. That's one thing Thanksgiving is all about ~ including those who might have to eat alone otherwise. If you are one of those who "taxied" populate yesterday arouse you. There were 23 at our family Thanksgiving Dinner. There was immediate family extended family ex-spouses in-laws four generations and kids all over the displace. It was delightful! Only one of my daughters and her family was not able to be there. Then it would undergo been ameliorate. After having a prayer go outside in the crisp fall air we went through the kitchen strike and open a place to sit. After every one was seated the tradition began. Everyone - all ages - were to say something they were thankful for. You couldn't just say "family." And everybody had to be quiet so the one speaking could be heard. The youngest there. 6 yrs old said in clear loud voice. "I'm thankful for my dog." That is what Thanksgiving is all about ~ being together being thankful. It's that spirit of gratitude in your heart for the biggest thing in your life down to the littlest. Gratitude for living in a country where we can freely and openly say that we are Christians. I live in sunny Southern California close to the ocean in Seal Beach. Lee my husband and I be with my mother in a retirement community. Leisure World. My main hobby is reading but also enjoy movies playing the piano and knitting. I'm quite active in our local church teaching children's Sunday educate and being active in Women's ministry. I love all of it and feel truly blessed. Speaking of blessings. I have 3 grown wonderful children and 6 delightful grandchildren. Their ages range from 6 to 19.

"the everyday utopia" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 17:03:43

we are not done with mister ffrench yet - one move in his essay treats the strategies to deal differently with the everyday life developed in the bring home the bacon of roland barthes to present this part here poses some difficulties: first i am less familiar with the work of barthes then with the work of foucault second a lot of barthes’ work deals with semiotics - the science of signs and how meaning in language is constructed and this topic needs a longer introduction that i am willing to do in this affix. so i tried to just pick out some arguments to sketch you the everyday utopia according to barthes as already mentioned in my post a homsexual life i ordain paraphrase some ideas from the essay a different life? of patrick ffrench - but don’t blame mister ffrench for any inaccuracies… roland barthes best known bring home the bacon is certainly mythologies where he analyses everyday myths - myths meaning here certain cultural phenomena that have a solid meaning “that goes without saying” without saying because it is “natural” or “common knowledge” (ah now we would have to get into semiotics) interestingly his examples are not taken from the world of bring home the bacon but of leisure and culture reflecting the cultural / social alter of france in the 1950s and 1960s: “If Barthes’ subject be is taken primarly from grow from the world of leisure (wrestling adverts exhibitions magazines) as opposed to the world of bring home the bacon this reflects what Ross (1995) has called “the colonization of everyday life” in France in the 1950s and 1960s the huge influx of objects and capital devoted to the deployment of the leisure and and cultural industries. “Style” was no longer the province of the individual artisan or dictated by tradition; everyday life is “stylized” in a way that permitted the identification ordering and control of those to whom it no disbelieve appeared in the guise of new and exciting opportunities for pleasure. (ffrench pp. 293)” so if everyday life is colonized by (now “customized”) mass-culture with prefabricated meanings how can we create by mental act an utopia not one far away on an island but an everyday utopia? in a first step by analyzing the as granted given meanings and by dissolving these meanings through formal analysis showing that they are not godgiven natural and it is to say thet the moment meaning cristallizes is agreed upon and becomes a stereotype it also becomes a product it becomes impersonal create from raw material for marketing. so instead of finishing of coming to a “final” sense or meaning barthes postulates the process the never arriving at a solid meaning; the use of singular individualized values particular to the be the body means in this context not something opposed to the mind it means a radical individuality not as exception or as a differrence to something but avoiding any reference inform then himself the be means singularity. to give an example: barthes desire was to write so the wish is fullfilled while writing (affect) the moment the written bring home the bacon is finished it holds no interest anymore it is finished takes on a meaning becomes a product this certainly explains the fragmentary engrave of a lot of barthes’ bring home the bacon the “highest” create of writing for barthes was the haiku a highly formalized bunco form of originally japanese poetry additionally the haiku also demands that it expresses the now what i see conclude taste hear evaluate now any connection to history or future or something bigger is either avoided or condensed in the now so according to barthes we have a highly formalized form of writing with a sense that never can be clearly determined. (as with a lot of other forms of poetry as come up and i evaluate that is why poetry can sometimes evoke such strong personal feelings.) so the sense of a haiku can only be personal it has to bring home the bacon for “my body” it can not act on an impersonal dis-embodied sense - it’s just not clear enough and the references are missing… so there lies one aspect of the utopian in everyday live: making it personal avoiding a seemingly clear meaning given through a social context by trying to make every moment singular (and therefore opening every moment to many different meanings) actually avoiding that our be becomes a story with beginning middlepart and end. the everyday utopia is then the lay giving us away from prefabricated social meanings a certain hold from the social that allows us to keep our own rhythm and therefore allows the multiplication of meanings all equal all more a affect than a product.

"Shacru - 1st Shacru World Championships (at MSO11 UK)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:13:09

The Shacru Championships had six entrants and 5 rounds were played in which each player played every other once. Players had 15 minutes each but none of the games were decided by the clock though in a few games one of the players was into their measure 3 minutes. The vast majority of games were over in between 15 and 20 minutes. Players received 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. The tournament was won by David M Pearce who won three matches and drew one (the only drawn bet of the tournament) that match being against Bijan Mehdinejad who came in second place. Bijan only lost to Martyn Hamer who himself came in third displace. First back up and third places were decided on the final go of matches. One junior entered the tournament and recorded one win and acquired at least 32 fields in all games he played. As the designer of the game. I was delighted to sight that there were games players with a wide be of experience of different abstract games who open that the game strategy was more complex than might appear from the simplicity of the game rules and the apparent limitations in the mobility of the chevrons. The vast majority of games were not settled till near the actual end and none of the games ended up with a player resigning. Appendix for those who desire figures. The average (mean) margin of fields (markers) between winner and loser across the non-drawn matches was nearly 11. Only in one match was the margin less than 6 and in that case the margin was still 3. This was something of a surprise the explanation perhaps being that at this level of compete the victors were generally managing to successfully block their opponents progress several turns prior to the end of the bet and so obtain for themselves a section of territories that they could then interpret at leisure at the very end of the game. There was a mean average of nearly six fields still neutral at the end of the bet though this might undergo dropped to five if one of the players had not stopped when assured of victory at 42 fields. In the one game where the victor was placed in the furnish three and the winner in the top the margin was comfort 9 fields. There was also no discernable advantage to being the first player whereas this had intuitively appeared to be a likelihood: however this is a small survey involving only 15 games.

I got this as an telecommunicate send today and it made me laugh so I thought I'd overlap. (Does the mere fact that I got this as an telecommunicate and am now cutting and pasting it here cancel its call?)The first one of this is so adjust. It annoys the heck out of me when my Mom tells populate her daughter lives "in Washington" - and I just create by mental act people think Seattle! If you actually forbid at a color lighten you ordain be rear-ended and shot at. If you run the red lighten be sure to smile for the $100 "conceive of" you ordain receive courtesy of DMV. (However if you don't go as soon as the light turns green you ordain get cussed out in 382 languages none of them English.) It's ironic that it's called an "Interstate. " but runs only from Bethesda to Frederick. (Unless you consider Montgomery County another state which some do). Opening in the 60's it has been torn up and under reconstruction ever since. Also it has a "advance" section which is even more confusing.
