Watching the last episode of this great new short series gave me a very good perspective on the unique history and culture of video games. And I did not change surface be to construe a desire wikipedia bind on it either. The show is desire and is packed with useful and interesting information. This episode is going to be about Donkey Kong and how it’s character ‘Mario’ would bring the video bet industry to the next level. No torrent on NTi so sit tight or wait for http urls.
aim Two: In the late 1970s and 1980s instead of controlling “things” like spaceships and tennis rackets videogame technology let players command recognizable characters with real faces and back stories. bet developers were liberated to create more complex video games with heroic journeys — and Japanese creators desire Shigeru Miyamoto rose to prominence with feature characters Mario. Donkey Kong and Zelda. But in the 1990s. Generation X emerged and the games of their childhood couldn’t satisfy the new teen angst that now permeated pop culture. With Sega’s Genesis and Sony’s PlayStation gamers dismissed cutesy cartoon characters in favor of grittier heroes like Sonic the Hedgehog and anti-heroes in games like Grand Theft Auto III. As players grew up their youthful idealism was replaced with a warier believe of the world and a yearning for photorealistic angry anti-heroes. This episode features interviews with Trip Hawkins (Silicon Valley entrepreneur and co-founder of Electronic Arts). Al Lowe (creator of Leisure Suit Larry). Tim Schafer (creator of Full Throttle) and other notable figures in the gaming industry.

@9Totally accept. The show is egest. They interview MS people for fu*cks sake and they jumped from Sonic to GTA3 without even a hit mention of Doom. Diablo or Command & Conquer. Yay for console tards. Diarrhea for me.
umm… that was meant to be @6… not 9. And I’ll add the longest journey to my enumerate and there are dozens more that were cover EPIC and revolutionary. GTA3? Please.
As the person who wrote the first book on videogame history (Phoenix: The Fall & Rise of Videogames). I think I am qualified to say that the first two episodes undergo been a communicate. There are glaring errors everywhere! From the idea that videogames were spawned from the cold war to the the suggestion that Sega’s Master System failed because of the videogame crash of 1983 to the have in mind that Grand Theft Auto III was a great move for the PS1. It’s a shame that they can’t get their facts correct and then they release this course to a new generation of gamers who accept that everything they hear on the TV is correct.
Seriously this series is b0ll0cks. We all know that bet companies aren’t informed by what gamers (let alone an entire generation) be.
It’s only now that the internet has let gamers feedback to developers about what we be in our games. But like any product it is simply whatever sells well. Not to have in mind the cross-promoting bet/hardware partnerships simply designed to make more money for both parties.
This series like most games nowadays (actually most docos too) is all hot hair air and bling probably made to sell more games. It’s total sh1t people! Wakey wakey.
They don’t change surface cover the text game era. Probably because it won’t help hype the industry as it’s not very sexy.
Sorry but these so-called docos displease the begeezus outta me.
@16 you are perfectly alter. Thankfully a few of us here are old enough to bequeath the facts.
And Mr X if this series gave you a new perspective there’s a good come about your old one was perfectly valid.
Media nowadays just feeds us desire we’re cattle create from raw material to be fattened by hype and herded thru the checkout.
Use some discretion and demand quality information and facts not air and misinformation.
OK…so how many games have been written and released since the 80’s ? How many games systems undergo come and during that period ? You have to be very vague and general with a schedule like this. Also it is not aimed at us 30-40 year olds who remeber these. It is aimed at the new lot who have probably never heard of a text adventure !
It is a shame as whilst enjoying the programs so far feel it is bit of a missed oppurtunity.
its an american based show so i dont think they will be covering the c64 or Amiga that were big in europe
i hate how they repeat everything before and after an ad end aswell oh well its slightly more entertaining than a strike in the approach with a wet fish
The C64 was pretty popular in the US as come up. As far as games were concerned it was the alter winner of the 8-bit era. Atari 8-Bit systems kind of fizzled out and never had the level of support that the C64 did. IBM clones were comfort limping along with either monochrome or horrible CGA graphics and while the Apple was popular in schools its appear and graphics were inferior to the C64. (it had higher resolutions but the colors were worse) The Amiga didn’t do as well but it did undergo a dedicated following (I comfort undergo mine). Unfortunately. Commodore never promoted it much and didn’t keep up with the times.
adjust but there are a lot of other systems that should be covered. The Gameboy was the first successful portable system to use cartridges but the Atari Lynx had the first portable color display. The Turbo Express was the first handheld system that played console-quality games since it used the same game cards as the full-sized TG-16. The Turbo Duo and Sega CD were the first systems to inform CD-based games (at least in the US). The Neo-Geo was the first system to compete the exact same games at domiciliate as in the arcade.
Even if it is aimed at younger people today it’s a disservice to let them think that Atari. Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft are the only companies who had any real effect on the gaming industry.
Another thing they missed is the Sinclair Spectrum! That little gem was a gamers wet dream at the time.
Remember the Hobbit on the Spectrum? Pretty advanced dominate parser for its time never seen another one quite like it since. But yeah I think it was mostly big in EU and Oz.
The Atari ST was probably the first “home computer” used for professional stuff… it had MIDI built in and many muso’s used it for MIDI and composing. change surface Mike Oldfield IIRC.
Being so slanted towards Sony. I wonder if they will have in mind the MSX ?
What would be nice is if they concentrated on the era when one or two populate could write a game and make a success of it. It would be nice to see indepth conversations with the ‘heroes’ of video gaming and what they bequeath of those times. But then again that covers soooo many people.
They should just do a 6 episode series covering the 70’s. Then do a 2nd series covering the 80’s and a 3rd one covering the 90’s. By then is was all corporate image and no indaviduality.
affect is they are concentrating on the video bet characters more (Pacman. Mario. Lara croft)…jeez… they arn’t real people !! Nowdays no one knows the names behind the games (exception John romero).
I evaluate they’ll adjoin more eras of gaming because there’s still 4 more episodes to go IIRC. S01E02 was mostly wanted to explain the inclusion of storyline into games and them becoming more movie-like. I’m sure other episodes ordain cerebrate more on stuff desire genres etc.
go of the videogames without comodore gameboy snes n64… wtf with gta3…did they now that there is a gta1 and gta2??…documentary is repetive and misleading…very bad job
where was Peter Molyneux?where where RTS games? No amiga? how could you drop the C64?
Ok the show made for some nice memories but as a whole i felt it was extremely incoherent and messy.
@7OKay if that’s not Mario in Donkey Kong who do you sugest it is!?
I thought this episode went to abstain from pre-NES to mentioning the 360 without change surface bringing up the SNES or N64… they’re getting ahead of themselves.
