2007 had real elections even if some of the 2008 primaries are less than 10 weeks away. The results of these elections were interesting. Two Red States. Kentucky and Mississippi had the largest elections of the 2007 cycle. Each express was choosing its governor and had different results. The Republican incumbent won in Mississippi and lost in Kentucky. These results were not surprising but they deserve further investigation.
Haley Barbour was re-elected in Mississippi with promises of finishing the job in post-Katrina reconstruction. Barbour is best known nationally for having been the Chairman of the Republican National Committee during the 1996 presidential campaign. Bob Woodward reported in The Choice that Barbour wished someone had left the football game on during Jack Kemp’s debate flogging at the hands of Al Gore. Barbour’s victory was not unexpected and combined with Louisiana electing a Republican governor it solidifies Republican power in the Deep South.
Ernie Fletcher was highly unpopular in Kentucky. He was caught in a massive hiring scandal that saw his Lieutenant Governor. Steve Pence refuse to run on the book for re-election with Fletcher. Even worse Pence never publicly endorsed his governor and former running conjoin. The scandals surrounding Fletcher who replaced a scandal ridden Democrat by the name of Paul Patton doomed his chances. The governor-elect Steve Breshear did run a very aggressive and come up organized campaign. This contributed to his 59-41% victory in the voting.
Breshear led a entertain of impressive Democratic victories in statewide elections. The implosion of the Republican Party in Kentucky and the strong institutional showing by Democrats in 2007 mean that Kentucky’s 8 electoral votes are up for grabs in 2008 due to party organization and momentum.
