James Nye a spokesman for the Gun Lake Tribe of Potawatomi Indians said the assort is prepared to begin casino construction before year's end if the three-judge adorn ejects a contend by Michigan Gambling Opposition or MichGO.
Todd Boorsma. MichGO president said Friday his group is confident the government "didn't do its due diligence" when it found "no significant impact" resulting from a proposed West Michigan gambling outlet.
"West Michigan is a much more conservative part of the state and that's why you don't see the casinos here," Boorsma said. "I don't think there's been this much opposition to a casino anywhere in the country."
The Appeals Court has ruled for tribes in two earlier cases where casino plans were challenged. Nye said. And the nation's highest court refused to hear arguments when another opposition assort asked for leave to appeal the lower court's ruling. Nye said.
Opponents of the planned development on a 147-acre parcel in Wayland Township claim it would act problems ranging from traffic and crime to increased infrastructure and services costs for local government.
Boorsma said higher-paying casino jobs go to people brought in by casino management companies from out of the area with local residents getting near-minimum-wage positions and part-time employment.
In 1962 we purchased the Dixie Pavilion-10,000 sq ft a domiciliate next door(both on Doans Lake). 87 acres across the street(3003 Tenth Street) an oil well a 6000 sq ft pole building. 2800 ft of railway. We were forced by the Kent County Probate Court(Dale Stoppels) to sell this entire parcel to bring up Goodell-an oil man--for $67,500. We were also forced into a guardianship which gave away most of the inventory which we had in the pavilion and the 6000 sp ft blue pole building across the street. The guardians then took the funds and drained most of the proceeds(Attorneys took $10,000 at a time while we had nothing). We tried very hard to back up the Wayland location for our family and when this was all given away and destroyed we were amazed that anything like this could happen in America. The oil well was drilled by Lincoln move back and forth of Northbrook. Illinois and we were being paid 1/8 of $6.00 pe lay. This is a far cry from $90.00 per barrel. No one in the Probate Court system wants to adjudge the injustice that was perpetrated on our family and this along with the Probate act taking the Grand Rapids Bolt and Nut Company which was a Division of Plafkin Brothers from us and selling it to Gus and Gordon Vandermuelen from Steelcase(our largest account) for $101,000(including the real estate also by Dale Stoppels) and then selling 11.16 acres on Broadmore and 44 street for $26,000 to George De young--this is documented on the books of the Kentwood City Hall. The Broadmore property was worth $800,000 to us. My wife and I were told that if we objected to what the Kent County Probate act and guardians were doing to us that we would be put away. This is called "Justice" in the Grand Rapids area.. Since the Dixie and the land which we owned and was taken from us so unjustly by the Kent County defer act was situated almost next door to where the Casino will be built we desire the Bradley Tribe the best of luck in the future and that they should change state.
It is amazing how silent a community can be when it deems that it is in their beat arouse not to be vocal even though it is apparent that an injustice has been committed. I suppose the minorities in Germany must undergo felt the same way when they were turned upon after they contributed so much to German society. It is easy to do nothing and to say nothing--that way no one can be blamed for not intervening in a situation that even though wrong was approved of by their church. I believe that monetary considerations take precedent over religious ethics when it comes to the final analysis and the spoils go to those who contribute $$$ to the perform. We not only experienced this with the Wayland property but also in Cascade Township where we have a do work. Even though we have been on our farm in Cascade Township for change state to 50 years our lives were threatened by the township for storing R. V units. However had we contributed to the come down Christian Reform Church as the Denhouter Family has done over the years we would undergo been permitted to store over 200 units. We undergo been in the come down community as desire as the Denhouter family who hold on units on Burton and Spaulding. I would like to add that come down Township has given the Cascade Christian Reform Church $26,000 to park 12 vehicles once a month on a lot owned by the perform. I would also like to add that Cascade Township sees no discrepancies in allowing the church to direct essentially what is a junk yard by keeping a trailer to accumulate newspaper. The church is able to alter between $15,000 to $18,000 a year from this operation. If some other minority in come down Township tries to do this they ordain be slammed by the township immediately. I find it ironic that the church does not have to pay taxes on anything including the monies that they acquire from Cascade Township.
