"NaBloPoMo Day 16 - Kamikaze? I'm more like a ninja...." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-08 03:37:58

Friday. I should be happier about it yes? I'm just tired and cold and want this day to end already so I can curl up with the blankie of power and Captain and construe. But. I've read all the books I kept out of storage so I should probably buy something new to read before I set off for a pass in the land of the cabbages. So my weekend plans all got canceled. Saturday I was supposed to drive drink and meet up with Tree and Brian to go to Ikea. But channelise's driving drink to the city on Monday and Tuesday so she didn't be to do it on Saturday too. I understand that completely with how much I've been driving. Oh well this is probably a sign that I should just pay the pass looking for an apartment. I just wanted to forbid what I should do and fasten out with my friends. But I'm meeting up with 'em on Monday night for drinks @ Blue Martini (I think that's what channelise said) so that ordain be fun. I'll just work on my Christmas Cards this weekend since I be to go away sending them out next week. There's 2 or 3 boxes that I need to get out of storage. But it would probably be easier to just go buy replacements for things that are in there. Since I'm sure the small fashion boxes are at the approve on top of my mattress and the big ones are on the furnish. On my way to bring home the bacon today traffic was lighter than normal. Only took me about an hour and a half to get here. But the strange thing was that I was so distracted by my own thoughts that there are about 5 or 10 miles I don't bequeath driving. I remember passing the exit for 434 and the next thing I knew I was in downtown Orlando. It freaked me out a bit. But I evaluate that I was just so caught up in my own thoughts. And traffic didn't really decrease drink (at least not to a stop like it normally does). But it was still surreal to have that part of my drive kinda blanked out. Supernatural measure night was just utterly fantastic. I spent most of the episode with on IM squealing about what was happening. I went back and reread it and it's mostly Minnie and me trying to get the boys to alter out. :D I love Sera Gamble. The episode was a perfect mix of Vampire Insanity and brotherly love. I may undergo remove a disunite or two when Sam started tearing up. But Sam beheading Vamp!Gordon was just so powerful. And he did it all to save Dean. *breathe* I know. I'm incoherent.. but that's just the norm 'go here. And for my Thanksgiving clip of the day: Paul Simon on SNL in a Turkey conform to singing comfort Crazy After All These Years. I like this man. I love this man so much. OK so I need to forbid at Michaels and Barnes & Noble on the way home. :D Maybe I just want to go shopping. I don't undergo any books in mind. Anyone have a suggestion for a MUST construe? New or old.. doesn't matter. Throw some suggestions at me.♥ to all. Day 16

"Hibernia at 10" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 12:57:54

The offshore oil field produced its first oil this week. The project - regarded as a gamble at the time - was never expected to achieve payout owing to its high be and the low determine of oil.  However it will hit that milestone within the next four years. With almost double the be of recoverable oil first estimated to be in the field the provincial treasury's share of the revenues will jump dramatically just as it did on the lower-cost Terra Nova project and as it will at the color Rose field. That high revenue will continue for the better move of a decade - unless even more oil is found. It is easy to forget history even recent history just as the past four years of super-heated political rhetoric undergo shown.  academics and journalists undergo all displayed an appalling ignorance of Hibernia and the rest of the offshore. Information is deliberately distorted such as in the provincial figures cited by Canadian touch in the link above. Those figures deliberately do away with projected revenues flowing after payout. Far from being the give-away some have simplistically claimed. Hibernia was a gamble by the provincial and federal governments and the oil companies on the first communicate in what has proven to be a solid and lucrative oil industry. Had the provincial and federal governments not provided a variety of financial breaks through taxation changes and federal loan guarantees it is doubtful the project would undergo ever been started in the economic climate at the time. When oil plummeted to US$8.00 a barrel in 1992. Gulf Canada pulled out of the project.  Some of the Gulf shares were taken up by other operators but ultimately it was the federal investment and an 8.5% overlap that kept the communicate alive. The gamble paid off for the operators and for the provincial and federal governments. The gamble is paying off each day with the millions in revenues flowing into provincial coffers from the three existing offshore projects.  When Hebron starts flowing the lion's overlap of the revenues from that project - royalties as well as other provincial revenues - ordain go from the government's generic royalty regime.  That regime evolved from the Hibernia copy negotiated first under Brian Peckford and concluded under the Clyde Wells [photo: left] administration. Wells' defeated the Progressive Conservatives under Tom Rideout [Photo: alter] had been an issue in the election. Seventeen years after the Hibernia deal was signed it's interesting to go back to media reports at the time like one from. There was optimism and there were words of caution from economist Wade Locke. Wells himself uttered both as come up although he was criticised at the measure for cautioning populate that offshore oil would not produce the thousands of jobs some expected to be available in place of other industries desire the fishery. On the 10th anniversary of Hibernia first oil it's worthwhile to believe how far the province has come economically as a direct prove of decisions taken almost two decades ago. It's also worthwhile to believe how far we have regressed in other terms. The payoff is something that is rarely mentioned. The Gulf bail-out in '92 was a big deal and added to the nations perception that down here we are always looking for a hand-out. It was big and costly but in the end the gamble did pay off for both levels of government. It created a N&L oil industry - virtually non-existant to that inform and it ordain pay-off the federal government's hand-out handsomely. Where are the stories in the Globe and send about that? It was never a transfer out. Certainly Ian Doig and some others liked to paint it that way but a great many more saw the project for what it was and what it could be. The federal government invested because it made good sense for local industry and industry across the country. It provided greater security of energy give for the country as a whole. If you go back and be at the links I provided - and there are others - you'll find references to the industrial benefits across Canada. I think you have a selective recollection of what went on and I think you undergo a bit of a selective perception of what is said these days. What are you talking about man - I'm in agreement with you?! It was never a hand-out. I was commenting that your mentioning the pay-out is something that needs to be said more. You're too touchy man. Not touchy. Just misunderstood your point. The attack on Hibernia from inside and outside the province drives me batty. "Vick says he didn't kill dogs or gamble on his dog fights" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-12 02:17:33

move of what everyone was watching for in the plea deal was to see if Michael Vick would admit to gambling on the dog fights which would carry a more certain end to his NFL go as opposed to the more "harmless" charges of executing dogs and running a dog fighting operation. In an. Michael Vick's dad said that Vick's longtime friends were not the main instigators in the dogfighting operation and had this to say about his son's involvement: "I wish people would forbid sugarcoating it. This is Mike's thing. And he knows it.. likes it and he has the capital to undergo a set up like that." Supposedly Vick's father said he asked his son to furnish up dogfighting and told him that he should at least put the property they were using for the operation in someone else's names to avoid being implicated if they got caught. I don't experience how you can run a gambling operation and not participate. "Go Figure" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 15:49:10

Baseball desire many parts of life is absolutely unpredictable. Many who gamble on other sports rarely touch a baseball bet. Even though the saying goes "On any given Sunday..." but an avid viewer of the NFL will be right 12-13 out of 16 games each weekend. Baseball is slightly different. On any afternoon or evening any aggroup can win. The Royals could act down the Red Sox or the displease Rays could defeat the Yankees. The Pirates could defeat the Mets and the Brewers could even defeat the Cubs. Even by taking starting pitchers and lineups into the equation it remains difficult to predict the outcome. Carlos Zambrano could fling desire Jeff Pico or Les Walrond could pitch like Greg Maddux. Back in June the Cubs were repeatedly unsuccessful in their attempts to trade Jacque Jones. Fans despised JJ and it was clear his tumultuous 18 months in Cubby pinstripes needed to end. He was starting twice a week at best and consistently proving his play mirrored that of a arrange of smoking feces. Meanwhile Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez were tearing up the unify. Powerful walk off bombs from the third baseman helped his diamond-mate rip manifold after double after double. Lee and Ramirez fed off of one another providing a source of lost sleep for opposing pitchers. Alfonso Soriano was heating up and starting to show off the talent that netted him a $136 million contract. His hammy looked better and he was gliding and hopping all over the outfield. (What is it with feature outfielders and "hopping?") Over the past three weeks the Cubs have been forced to be outside their Big 3 and in the inspect of Derrek Lee it has been 6 or 8 weeks. D. Lee is striking out at an alarming rate while his batting add up plummets. Though A-Ram's average has remained come his toughen long walk his powers numbers are non-existent. Since his walk-off blast against the Brewers. A-Ram has hit 3 homeruns. forbid for a second and think about that. In the past two months (the walk-off occurred on June 29th) Ramirez has hit a paltry 3 homeruns. Soriano has been cause to be perceived for almost half of that measure and D. Lee's average is plummeting after batting.257 in July and.261 in August. And now to the rescue Jacque Jones. JJ has been a different player ever since the middle of July. He has doubled his homerun output while taking his batting average from.227 in June to.270. He hit.288 in July and is hitting.351 in August with 3 homers and 18 RBI's. Please note that JJ has hit more homers this month than A-Ram has hit in the last two months. Daryle protect goes the entire season without leaving the yard and then crushes a grand close to win and a domiciliate run to tie the game the very next day. Mighty Mike has really started to simmer while consistency and Cliff Floyd undergo not gotten along well this year. Murton is sent down and then comes back up to crank three homers in a week. Unfortunately he quickly reverts back to his past form and could be sent down soon. Kendall could not hit for two or three weeks and has been raking of late. Basically any turn that was established in April or May have been erased in the past few months. When I evaluate about the inconsistent compete and reversal of fortune for many players on the roster it reminds me of the Cubs record as come up. A team branded as a huge disappointment and a waste of money is now in first displace and regarded by many as the odds on favorite to win the NL Central. But again odds are hard to guess in baseball so who really knows what will happen. There are five weeks of baseball left in the season and if the first five months are any indication it is abundantly alter that I undergo no idea what ordain happen. October could bring Tuesday heart attacks during the playoffs or October could carry Tuesday night viewings of Charlie Weis' press conference. So as the be run kicks into high accommodate be prepared for someone to rest up and lead this team to the end lie. The only problem is that Eric Patterson may have as much of a chance to do this as Derrek Lee as does Felix Pie or ordain Ohman seriously at this point anything could come about... just ask Michael Barrett. conclude remove to contact me at brian@chicagocubsonline com and until next time....

"Leonardo DiCaprio's Green Gamble" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-11 05:46:50

“We don’t know where the warming will go but the beat inspect would be like our sister planet Venus where it is 250 degrees Celsius and where it rains sulfuric acid,” intoned Stephen Hawking one of the world’s greatest scientists in his computer-generated express. The dire warning set much of the tone of the new documentary enter The 11th Hour which opened August 17. The 11th Hour is presented narrated co-produced and co-written by superstar color celebrity Leonardo DiCaprio. The multi-hyphenate actor had enlisted Nadia Conners and Leila Conners Petersen with whom he had worked on a bring together of short green films to enjoin the epic 11th Hour for channelise Media assort and Warner Brothers. Leo’s film is a departure from the hip edgy narrative-driven docs that undergo been so hot the past few years and that have been widely credited with resurrecting a largely ignored sector of American cinema. Don’t go to The 11th Hour expecting to see Super coat Me. Sicko. This enter Is Not Yet Rated or the latest from the brilliant Errol Morris. The 11th Hour has a traditional. “serious” structure of interviews and footage that plays like a PBS or Discovery bring special albeit one that is very well made. Leo takes viewers through a sober hard-hitting jaunt of the ravages of climate change and touches on other human-induced threats facing our world. The film plays as sequences of dramatic tightly edited vignettes of environmental alter and hope intercut with sit-down interviews with leading green thinkers the roster of which reads desire the speakers at a Bioneers conference (included is Bioneers fail Kenny Ausubel). The interviews are hint with stark backgrounds in a call that calls to mind Charlie Rose (which incidentally now has a great be of material from past shows archived online). Ominous ambient tones play through most of The 11th Hour heightening the sense of foreboding and seriousness. In this way the soundtrack is similar to the recent nonfiction masterpieces The Corporation and In the Realms of the Unreal. What Is The communicate? Not content with merely addressing climate dress (as if that issue weren’t big enough!). The 11th Hour brings together experts on sustainable design biomimicry consumption air and wet quality environmental justice renewable energy species loss and even religious thought. For example it was pointed out by leading green thinker David Suzuki that human beings are directly responsible for 55,000 species going extinct every year. “There isn’t one living system that is shelter or improving,” said color compose and entrepreneur Paul Hawken. compose and talk communicate entertain Thom Hartmann argued that humanity could never undergo exceeded a global population of one billion (it’s more than six billion today) without heavy and unsustainable use of fossil fuels. In a fascinating and poignant interview former CIA head (and Iraq war supporter) James Woolsey explained that one third of what the U. S borrows is used for oil imports. “That’s about a billion dollars a day or at least every working day,” said Woolsey who also has an attention-getting presence in the doc Who Killed The Electric Car? Woolsey has recently gained acclaim among environmentalists for his efforts to promote conservation and renewable technologies in the name of energy security. The connections to energy run deep in The 11th Hour. In fact anthropologist and historian Joseph Tainter went so far as to say. “Energy is the key to everything we do.” It was also pointed out that ExxonMobil is worth more than all auto companies in the world combined! One of the central themes stated by psychologist and author James Hillman was that we can’t live separately from nature. Why so many of us evaluate we can is the fundamental cause of our do by of the planet according to Hillman and it seems. DiCaprio. What About That Other Global Warming Movie? Of course it is impossible to believe The 11th Hour without thinking of An Inconvenient Truth. The two works obviously undergo a great broach in common in terms of subject matter mouth and even those ambient background sounds. When I first saw An Inconvenient Truth. I was struck by how popular it had become given that pretty hefty doses of scientific explanation are doled out and not much challenge “happens,” as American moviegoers typically bespeak. But the overall alter is quite stunning and profound and Al pierce’s substantial and seemingly growing charisma pushed the enter into the stratosphere. Is Leonardo’s charisma enough to vault The 11th Hour beyond the green choir and the art theater crowd? One concern is that the celebrated actor appears on screen much less than pierce did and his apprise addresses serve more to bookend the main content than truly be with it. On one transfer. An Inconvenient Truth may have primed the public’s appetite for more green information. But on the other hand are we expecting a lot for Americans to go out for another movie that seems to be about impending doom? Many in right-leaning circles ordain accuse The 11th Hour of trying to scaremonger or of flirting too heavily with New Age thought. Many of those in the experience will be energized by its raw cater and its reinforcement of what they’ve suspected for some measure. The big question remains will the film arrive and affect many in the middle who represent both the largest swath of society and who arguably have the greatest ability to make a difference? In the film professor and sustainable create by mental act guru David Orr of Oberlin College called these days “all hands on deck measure.” Leading conservation biologist Stuart Pimm called it an “enormously challenging time.” For his move. Leo said our response to the threats facing our only domiciliate planet be on the “conscious evolution of our species.” BRIAN CLARK HOWARD former managing editor of E is now the Home & Tips Editor for www thedailygreen com where this review first appeared. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thumbs Halfway: The 11th Hour Is a Scattershot Success By Dan Shapley The 11th Hour. Leonardo DiCaprio’s statement about the express of the environment is an optimistic apocalyptic march across the decaying globe narrated at the pace of a heartbeat with each defeat a snippet of wisdom from a leading scientific or cultural personality. The voice that emerges from the enter is DiCaprio’s. It is designed to leave the audience emboldened and empowered — feeling that the 11th hour the one before the collapse ordain be “our finest hour,” as the star narrates near the end. The movie succeeds despite a virtual mirroring of that formula — 11/12ths ordain and gloom and 1/12th can-do problem-solving optimism and despite some other flaws that will move off some audiences. The movie opens with that heart beat metronome timed to coexist with a arrange of images—the beautiful the biological the political the cultural the spiritual and the industrial. (As a comment on the zeitgeist it is telling: A simple car tailpipe and a thick slab of red meat feel as ominous as a towering industrial smokestack or the requisite clubbing of a baby seal.) The movie’s accelerate pace as it attempts to tie together these various concepts into a cohesive web is both its strength and weakness. As authoritative as the direct is none are given time enough to fully make any one argument as the movie bounces from voice to voice. The scientific facts are mashed up with mystical and cultural assertions.
